Roland PMA-5 Convert Tool

I own a Roland PMA-5,and being that it's discontinued it seems impossible to find the "Convert TOOL" FOR PC's that is available with the unit. I've been able to locate the Convert Tool for MAC but I'm having a more difficult time finding it for PC's. Is there anyone out there who can help!

ENCORE, cakewalk and cool edit

I NEED a modern version of this music programs. How can I do? Necesito una versión actualizada de estos programas, cómo puedo hacer para conseguirlo? I have Encore 4.0. GRACIAS !

Re: ENCORE, cakewalk and cool edit

Re: Encore.

There have been several releases of Encore since 4.0. Recently 4.2 was released by G-Vox (Win9x and ME) and version 4.5 (Win 2000 and XP). Unfortunately, G-Vox appears to have dropped out of sight or, worse, gone out of business. There are a lot of copies of Encore 4.2 floating around (check e-Bay), but no extant copies of 4.5. Alternatively, you can take a look at Coda's Finale, or Sibelius.

Mixman Pro Studio 4. Can it.....

Hi there,
I've got tons of electro and hip hop tunes nd would like to take samples from these tunes, like loads of them (easily over a 100 drum loops/acapellas/riffs etc etc) and compose and mix them in a 70 minute megamix. Does mixman pro studio 4 allow the handling of huge amount of samples in one track.

Please please someone respond, I want to get started.

A few minor clues to Windows improvments

Be sure to examine your .INI files in your Windows folder. For the sake of simplicity and safety, if you must edit them, use a simple DOS editor. At the DOSPROMPT type EDIT. (C:\> EDIT). This will lauch a very simple and essential editor that won't corrupt your files with automatic spell-checking or whathaveyou.

This is a cool memory command that was in my old SYSTEM.INI file:

[vcache]
maxfilecache=800
chunksize=1024
:: <--This line is a comment for us, not a command.
:: 800 = 800K for file/directory RAM caching.
:: This chunksize means that memory will be asked for
:: in 1K "bite-sized" chunks by the caching.

[386enh]
Paging=off
:: Paging=off turns off virtual memory

OK. Now the following is an exact copy of my SCANDISK.INI Notice how much useful educational info is in this file. Unless you look inside your .INI files, you may never learn how they perhaps can work otherwise. This file is important if you want your system checking to prevent and not CAUSE errors.

; SCANDISK.INI

;

; This file contains settings you can use to customize the ScanDisk program.

; The settings in this file do not apply when running ScanDisk in Windows 95,

; unless you are checking an unmounted compressed volume file. These settings

; will apply if you run ScanDisk from an MS-DOS prompt in single-application

; mode.

;

; -------------------------------------------------------------------

; The [ENVIRONMENT] section contains the following settings, which

; determine general aspects of ScanDisk's behavior:

;

; Display Configures ScanDisk to run with a particular type of

; display. The default display type is Auto (ScanDisk

; adjusts to the current display).

;

; Mouse Enables or disables mouse support. The default value is On.

;

; ScanTimeOut Determines whether ScanDisk should detect disk timeouts

; while performing a surface scan. The default value is Off.

;

; NumPasses Determines how many times ScanDisk should check each

; cluster during a surface scan. The default value is 1.

;

; LabelCheck Determines whether ScanDisk should check volume labels

; for invalid characters. The default is Off.

;

; LfnCheck Activates Scandisk to validate Long File Names, if they exist.

; The default is ON, to check Long File Names for problems.

;

; SpaceCheck Determines whether ScanDisk should check for invalid spaces

; in filenames. The default is Off.

;

; Mount Determines whether ScanDisk will mount unmounted DoubleSpace

; drives once it has determined they are error-free.

;

[ENVIRONMENT]

Display = Auto ; Auto, Mono, Color, Off

Mouse = On ; On, Off

ScanTimeOut = On ; On, Off

NumPasses = 1 ; 1 through 65,535 (anything over 10 is slow)

LabelCheck = Off ; On, Off

LfnCheck = On ; On, Off

SpaceCheck = Off ; On, Off

Mount = Prompt ; Prompt, Always, Never

; -------------------------------------------------------------------

; The [CUSTOM] section determines ScanDisk's behavior when ScanDisk is

; started with the /CUSTOM switch. You can adjust these settings to

; create a customized "version" of ScanDisk. This can be especially

; useful for running ScanDisk from a batch file. The [CUSTOM] settings are:

;

; DriveSummary Determines whether ScanDisk displays full-screen

; summary information after checking each drive.

; The default is Auto (ScanDisk displays the summary

; only if it encounters errors on that drive).

;

; AllSummary Determines whether ScanDisk displays full-screen

; summary information after checking all drives.

; The default is Auto (ScanDisk displays the summary

; only if it encounters errors on any drive).

;

; Surface Determines whether ScanDisk will perform a surface scan:

; Never (Default) Does not perform a surface scan.

; Always Performs a surface scan without prompting first.

; Prompt Prompts before performing a surface scan.

; The /SURFACE command-line switch overrides this setting.

;

; CheckHost Determines whether ScanDisk will first check a host drive

; before checking any compressed drives located on that drive.

; Never (Default) Does not check the host drive.

; Always Checks the host drive without prompting first.

; Prompt Prompts before checking the host drive.

;

; SaveLog Determines what ScanDisk does with the repair log file:

; Off (Default) Does not save the repair log.

; Append Appends the log to the previous log, if any.

; Overwrite Replaces the previous log with the new log.

;

; Undo Determines whether ScanDisk creates an Undo floppy disk.

; The default is Never (ScanDisk does not create an Undo disk).

; The Prompt value causes ScanDisk to prompt you for a disk.

[CUSTOM]

DriveSummary = Off ; Auto, On, Off

AllSummary = Off ; Auto, On, Off

Surface = Prompt ; Never, Always, Prompt

CheckHost = Always ; Never, Always, Prompt

SaveLog = Off ; Off, Append, Overwrite

Undo = Never ; Prompt, Never

; The following settings determine the corrective action ScanDisk will

; take if it was started with the /CUSTOM switch and finds a disk error.

; The next five settings accept any of the following values:

; Prompt Causes ScanDisk to prompt you before fixing this problem.

; Fix Causes ScanDisk to fix the problem without prompting you.

; Quit Causes ScanDisk to terminate if it encounters this problem.

Kick unused DLL's out of your damn RAM!!!!!!!! This is signific

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\AlwaysUnloadDLL]

@="1"

What is printed above is an excerpt from the registry in an exported (and text encoded) form. This excerpt looks much the same as it would look in REGEDIT.EXE (the GOD program used to manually edit the registry). In the actual REGEDIT.EXE window, the @="1" would probably be a STRING or NUMBER equal to 1. 1 simply means "yes"; it's like a checkmark.

The excerpt simply tells Windows that it should keep memory as free as possible. More specifically, it tells Windows to avoid keeping .DLL files in RAM if the programs that use them aren't running. You better read what I just said over again. THIS COMMAND STOPS USING FILES THAT AREN'T NEEDED SINCE THEY TAKE UP YOUR RAM. There it is, right there. It's probably not going to show up in your registry if you look, because it has to be written in manually, like I did. Sure enough, on Windows95/98/etc. it works.

This is probably the best Registry Tweak that I know of because it's so simple, but so important, especially considering how many dumb .DLL files accumulate like viruses from big programs.

SPECIAL: Registry Hack that speeds up your system.

Be aware that the general subject here is Registry tweeking, otherwise known as registry tweaking, otherwise known as registry hacking, otherwise known as optimizing your operating system, otherwise known as tips and tricks, otherwise known as making your pc run better, otherwise known as nurturing your bratty pc. If you find the previous sentence too technically annoying, then you aren't mentally prepared to understand the registry. If not, then read on, and be sure to look up this topic on a good search engine. The true masters will provide you with the tools and tricks in their original form.

If you can only stand to check a cool link and are sick of my endlessssssss rants, then click <A HREF="http://www.davecentral.com/browse/211/?topic=209,211">*here*</A>

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

This is a part of another REGEDIT.EXE export command. This isn't actually a command, but a reference to a nested set of folders in the registry. I call them folders, because the registry is just like a file system that doesn't use icons, but just raw data. When you see it in REGEDIT (the registry editor) it just looks like a humongous outline that takes up too many pages to print in your lifetime.

This reference to <b>[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]</b> is noteworthy because under this heading is a list of programs that are scheduled to be run at system startup. The ones in here are the ones that you often can't change any other way. I can't remember for sure (I intentionally deleted part of mine), but the TASKMONITOR is one entry. If I am wrong, it might say APPLOG.EXE or something like that.

Anyway, the taskmonitor is that REALLY ANNOYING PROGRAM that wastes tons of your time. It is the program that logs most read/write file access actions to files in your APPLOG folder in your WINDOWS folder. Although some files in APPLOG are useful during installations, technically the entire folder can be deleted if not too many programs hide their terrible installation command junk in there. APPLOG stands for application logging.

The TASKMONITOR is basically logging most every single action on almost every program on your system to a bunch of files. This is TOTALLY SLOW. Of course, just to log a write command, the application logger (TASKMONITOR) has to create even more write commands. When you change the entry from TASKMONITOR.EXE to some other harmless and small program (such as a memory cleaner), then your system speeds up every time it launches instead of slowing down. This also reduces disk fragmentation, EVEN THOUGH THE DISK DEFRAGMENTER PROGRAM TURNS ON TASKMONITOR!!!! Yes, it's a sad fact. The program that's supposed to make your pc run faster, via disk defragmentation can actually slow it down. This happens if you select "Optimize applications" or whatever it's called in DEFRAG.EXE.

DEFRAG.EXE activates this registry entry (amongst a few others lurking elsewhere), I suspect. It does this because in order to know how to optimize each application program it has to log it's behavior. This is ridiculously logical in theory, but rampantly ridiculously illogical in actual practice. So application optimization causes disk thrashing, even though the purpose of defragging is to STOP disk thrashing. This proves how BAD bad BAD Micro$oft is. Surely they know this, but don't care. This may not be an isssue in all versions of Windows, but it's in Windows 98SE which is your basic intermediate blueprint for the Windows family. The registry is loaded with dumb things like that, and multiple times!

This is why Registry Cleaners and Optimizers were invented. The Registry is inherently flawed. Any program that uses the registry is taking a big risk. Better programs will use their own .ini files instead of the registry. In case you were wondering, the registry is so huge because it's actually many files combined into one. Naturally it would be easier to edit those files separately, but Micro$oft chose to make the most important section of the Windows system the most difficult and dangerous to access and change.

Which soundcard (and another hardware equipment) is required to record in my PC from a keyboard or microphone?

Scanning Software.

I am looking for music software that will enable me to scan a piece of sheetmusic, edit, transpose etc. then reprint.
I see in some of the programmes I have looked at that one programme sometimes relies on another programme to do the scanning.
Is there one that will do the whole lot...
Some idea of costs would help as well.

Cheers

Boost Your Memory Free !

PS Please Give me the code , if you do , you will be a King /or Queen to me

Just restart your machine... OR, clean your machine instead

The program, you refer to is not more memory, it only attempts to clean the memory not released by bad programming, it does not increase your computers memory. If you are running many programs on start up, you are already slowing your computer.

My last memory purchase of 128k was $3.00 after all the rebates, I though it was reasonable. Check out your local swap meet and get some reasonable priced memory. See memory suggestions by software: http://www.crucial.com/library/softwareguide.asp

Now if you have 30 or more program running when you start your computer instead of 15 or 18 then you can do a little housework on your own computer.

Many programs do not need to be in the startup but do load using valuable memory. See "msconfig" (http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/)and instead of following his paragraph 4 look at the comprehensive list of what is in your msconfig startup memory
(http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm)

Now if you do this house cleaning it will provide you with a faster leaner machine. Far better than asking someone to supply you with a code, for a program that does not add more memory. In addition, you should not ask for codes, especially on this Music Board, it is not a wares or cracker board.

Also have you downloaded Ad-aware, to be certain you are not running spyware, or scumware that will slow down your computer? AD-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html will identify numerous programs considered spyware, including Radiate's Aureate.

Ad-Aware scans a user's hard drive and allows the user to remove the suspected spyware. Spyware uses a lot of memory you are not aware of, and bandwidth also telephoning home. it will also tell you ho many programs are running when you configure it to scan memory. Good tool to check and see if scumware has added its self to your computer.

Remove temporary files, these can bog your system down also, "Easy cleaner 1.7" is a program to clean junk and un-needed items from your computer registry. , http://www.toniarts.com/dwnloads.htm Windows XP users, please read the notes for help files

Re: Midi connection between computer and Yamaha O1v

I am not too clued on this but I would look in the manuals under MMC (or Midi Machine Code). I think that is the standard protocol for controlling hardware through midi...

MMC is common in software Multitrack recorders like Logic Audio, Cubase, CakeWalk... etc etc...

Videos to C.D.

This may be a very common or a very stupid question, but is there a way to convert video to DVD?

Yep...

The main one I know is with a DVD Superdrive equipped Mac. It can be done on the PC but Apple have put a lot of work into making their DVD movie making a breeze and they have managed it...

The thing you don't get with a Mac as standard is a Video IN. You can buy cards for this. My friend uses a Formac Studio for all his Video inputting. I use my DV camera with a Firewire connection...

If you have a windows machine. Check with others. It can be done...

My volume controls disappeared

My volume icon has disappeared... when I go to control panel.. and re-click.. it does nothing.. my sound no longer plays.. is there a way I can fix this..?

Re: My volume controls disappeared

Your sound card is not working? Have you looked to see if is still installed in your device manager? On the other hand, possibly it is something you recently downloaded that corrupted the software/driver, or it is time for an upgrade “newer soundcard.” They can go bad…

I am presuming you have done the general maintenance, scandisk, defrag, and have your anti-virus software is updated.

Click on "My computer, control panel, system, and the tab device manager” is it still installed? If it is not an, on-the-motherboard sound card, you might need to reinstall the software for your sound card.

Anybody have some words???

Hack your mind, and your system will follow.

Your system is very powerful, indeed. My old PC was very fast with only 128MB RAM at 660 MHz, but I did have to do LOTS of system reconfiguring to get back about 80% of the memory and speed i was not truly getting.

Probably the worst aspect of any PC is the operating system. Usually everything is turned on, and the stuff that's turned on is either useless, annoying, or slow.

Aside from basic reconfiguration of the BIOS and operating system and resident programs, check to make sure that your hard drive(s) are fast enough. Also make sure that disk compression is not being used (with the exception of FAT32).

You seem to express a genuine interest in knowing your system and keeping it running smoothly. You also have expressed a willingness to actually experiment with solutions. This is really good news for you, because most people don't know, don't want to know, and don't want to try. They just give up.

Since you have these strengths, I think you should budget some of your time to specifically research how to make your system efficient. Here is a rough checklist of things to look up online and in books at the bookstore:

1) Manual editing of the Registry. This is the most dangerous if you are careless, yet the most powerful and the most useful. If you are careful with what you do, and keep regular safety backups of your system, then you can incrementally boost performance. The Registry is a conglomerate of files and hidden directories and hidden files and data and commands. It is basically the brain of your PC. Manually editing the Registry is like brain surgery. In fact, by editing the Registry manually, you can bypass many programs that do it for you. This makes you a superuser fast once you begin to get comfortable with it. Fortunately, this is not such a rare trick. Many people have been doing this for years, and there are now lots of programs to help you do it. Better still, there is tons of public information about which tricks work, and how. Some registry tweeks (or tweaks) are only a few text words long, but have deep effects upon system performance. If you learn nothing else about your PC, you should learn to tweek the registry.

2) Try to get a basic understanding of general file types and how an operating system accesses them. If you know what a .DLL file is and how they generally are used, then when you discover a program that lets you stop using them safely, you will be in better control to make your sytem faster. Similar issues arise with virtual device driver files. Learn some essential DOS commands and find out what files are lurking in your computer. It's also interesting to learn different ways a disk is accessed. Each different way has its advantages and disadvantages.

3) Remain a skeptic. Most technical facts conflict directly with advertising and manufacturing claims. Salesman come in many disguises, including some user manuals. If YOU know what the technical truth is, then you won't get hosed by stupid Micro$oft tricks or other adware issues. If you suspect that a particular program or file is giving you and your system angst, you are probably correct to trust your instinct.

Most commercial programs are incomplete and buggy. Anything that looks too fancy is probably hiding some issues. It takes time to make things look pretty, but it takes a lot more time to make things work. Some of the very best programmers have almost no aesthetic taste. This is for our benefit, because they have focused themselves on making something that works, not something that looks good. Of course, a few pros can do both, but they are extremely rare or are actually a team of pros.

I hope I have shed some light on this. Even though this kind of solution is a rather long-term one, it is a permanent solution, and one that will make you smarter. It also means that you will be able to help other people in times of need. Once you learn some reliable tricks, you'll get more creative and adventurous and will have more intuition about odd situations. Remember, I'm not suggesting becoming a programmer, I'm just suggesting becoming the guy who reads all the manuals and advanced info about each program that matters to you.

Even if you barely do any of this, if you overcome the natural fear of being overwhelmed with information, then you will be better prepared to deal with each buggy issue, and you'll be able to have more meaningful person to person conversations with technicians, programmers, hackers, crackers, and other techies. Sometimes I talk to people like that just to mine them for information. It usually works.

What software do I need

Im looking to be able to put music on a score then have the computer play it sounding like a piano. I need to be able to burn this song onto a cd. Any suggestions on what software I need and if I can download this software. My son has a solo festival next weekend and we just found out he needs a piano accompanyment and we cant find anyone that can go with him. So I called and was told he could make a recording of the songs. So now I need to input the score and then record it. Please please please help. Thanks.

Re: Marantz PMD 740

Do a search to see who rents this machine. They will probably have a copy of the manual. Ask if they will send a photocopy to you and compensate them for their time/expense.
