Pro Tools Hard Drive Problem

I am running Pro Tools 4.0 on a Power Mac 8100. I have just recently reassembled this system which was running fine 2 years ago. Now I am unable to record onto the recording drive when running through the Pro Tools card. If I record internally from the CD player it works. Pro Tools recognises that my recording drive exists in all Hardware setups. Sound in and sound out are set to Digidesign. Why is this not working? The message Pro Tools comes up with is "unable to allocate space to record". There is 1GB of space free. Please help.

Driving miss daisy; driving you crazy

Maybe ProTools or the Sound Manager or DAE has a corrupted preferences file. This is one of the most common issues with mac programs that use preferences files. Browse through your system folder:preferences: for anything related to these programs. Move these files to a safe location and restart. After restarting and running ProTools again, you will have to reset your system settings, but maybe this time it will work.

Just to be safe, I also suggest running Norton Utilities Speed Disk, Disk Doctor, and Apple Disk First Aid (using another startup disk or RAM disk). Run this whole set a few times, as each program will fix issues that the others can't, and each problem solved will reveal other hidden problems to be fixed by the next round.

Maybe there is a compatibility problem with which file system you are running. The apple Extended format is different from the standard format. This is particularly an issue for any program that has to write directly to disk, such as hard disk recorders. If you are using any other form of disk compression this could also be interfering. This is similar to Windows programs having trouble with or without FAT32 disk formatting. Both FAT32 and Apple Extended Format are designed to use disk space more efficiently by employing a simple form of disk compression.
But maybe i'm totally on the wrong track.
good luck.

listening audience statistics

I am trying to get statistics for a class have to do a presentation on. Do you happen to know what the stat are for listeners in the age range of 15-18, what type of music they like, and why they like to listen to that type of music? I would be very helpful if I can get this info by tomorrow?? Anyone can help

Re: listening audience statistics

You should try CMJ or Billboard or some kind of print magazine. Why not call up a mainstream radio station or a radio promoter. They would know. Just beware of the bullshitters.

Resample to remove noise from recordings

Hi,

Many thanks ilogic,i've tried everything without any good result.I've tried something else.I'm recording with a sample rate of 40,000 hz and then i resample the audio file to 44,100.It is then very easy to remove the remaing noise with the noise reduction option of Soundforge.Opinions of everyone on this please.I also want to know what recording studios use(software, equipment) to restore old recordings.

Re: Resample to remove noise from recordings

Have a look at http://www.hideawayaudio.com/restorat.htm

Just for info, commercial audio restoration costs about £150 per minute.

can't see volume/recording control win 98

hi -

My windows recording/volume controls will not become visible on the screen. They appear in the task bar when i start em from the start menu or by clicking on the icon in the tray, but when I click on them in the task bar they do not come up or the screen/get focus. It's the same with both windows recording options as well. I've reinstalled the windows multimedia stuff and still can't get the windows up! I have rebooted my machine umpteen times but its the same result.

should I resign my self to reinstalling windows to get my audio properties back?

cheers

Recording Vocals

i am a complete amatuer at recording vocals, i produce hip hop /rap instrumentals and that is it. what i need to know is the answers toi these questions, are vocals recorded in mono? how can i make the recording sound thicker? how much reverb is used in rap vocals? such as the ones used in jay z's songs etc. when recording vocals do i need to use layers of the same file and delay it to make it thicker? ur help would be much appreciated.

Follow your instincts carefully

It really all depends upon what sounds good to you as a creator. In my opinion, too much reverb is any amount greater than 45 %. Lots of professional recording engineers actually record the same rapper doing the same rap two or three times (or more). They take the good parts and mix them together to make the voice sound thicker. As long as the timing mostly matches, it works. For the parts that are kinda sloppy, the artist does an overdub, or the engineer uses another take.

Sure, this is harder work than flanging or chorusing or detuning or EQ or whatever, but it has a particular sound that is worth it.

Basically, to me, stereo vocals sound much better than mono vocals. Some engineers will actually record using two different mics at the same time.
I think that any kind of difference between the left and right vocal channels can lend an interesting effect. You just have to experiment. Even just using different EQ on each side makes a difference. Panning settings help to control whatever stereo effect you use.

Keep in mind that it has been extremely common for decades to have the reverb input be in mono even if the original tracks are in stereo, and even if the reverb output is in stereo. This means that it's common for mono tracks to have stereo effects mixed with them. It also means that it's common to have stereo tracks with a reverb or effect that doesn't really come from either track (L or R), but comes from some strange mixture of both.

Actually, you don't even have to use the reverb or effect from the matching original track. If you do multiple takes of the same (or similar) musical part, you could mute the original track, but keep it's effect/reverb to mix with it's "fraternal twin".

You need to experiment is the main answer. You could discover a better way to make sounds thicker than everybody else using some funky combination of effects and settings and sources.

<b>A nice way to learn professional tricks is to read articles in MIX magazine, EQ magazine, Sound On Sound, and URB. Pay attention whenever they interview people who worked on successful or cool songs. These interviews are often the only chance people like us get to hear how it's actually done by pros. It also helps to become familiar with what certain types of gear look like.</b> That way, when I see Moby on MTV or in the New York Times, or Nas, or somebody decent like that... if they give a peek at their gear, I know what it is and maybe get ideas as to how they do something. Still, even those cat's don't get anywhere unless they experiment. (Which I'm sure they do!)

props.

No you don't have to pay to join to use the free
version of this site which you are on now.

Just go to the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/" target="_top">front page</a> and browse through the
software categories from there.

Joining gets you additional benefits such as
having a cut down version of this site with over
100 applications on CD-Rom sent to you along with
a paper newsletter each month.

Korg Triton sample triggering

Does anyone know if there is a way to trigger samples on the Triton Sampler/Workstation from a foot controller? I don't have a clue.

Re: Korg Triton sample triggering

As far as I know, the Triton doesn't have the kind of input you're after. The normal way to trigger samples is by MIDI.

Andy

Re: Korg Triton sample triggering

Well, I was actually wondering about any MIDI foot controllers that could trigger samples/notes. Ideas?

I'm not sure what you mean about who sent you a
message saying they were too busy, perhaps Music

You can <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/MusicMatch/" target="_top">download the free version 7.10 here</a>.

Syncing of vs-880ex with protools or similar

i was wanting to be able to sync my vs with protools or somthing like protools for easy maniplulation. i have a SBlive platinum card on my comp, so i have optical in/out and midi in/out.
any help would be appriciated.
thanks
ryan

Re: Syncing of vs-880ex with protools or similar

Read the VS manual for the sync'ing using MTC (midi time code). If you follow the instructions, it does work if you have the midi connection with the other midi device (this case being the computer) which can send or receive midi information.

The optical connector on the soundcard is the best thing for you to use. I would buy a digital coxial SP/DIF (VS digital output) to optical
SP/DIF convertor box. You can buy these from a hifi shop although I think M-Audio might make one.

Get back to me if you get stuck..

RECORDING GUITAR LIVE ON ACID MUSIC 3.0

I HAVE A COMPAQ 5003 WITH THE STOCK SOUND CARD IN IT. HAS AN INPUT FOR A MIC. I WANT TO RECORD ELECT GUITAR ON ACID MUSIC 3.0 BUT IM NOT SURE HOW TO HOOK IT UP. I DONT WANT TO DO ANY DAMAGE TO MY COMP. I HAVE A DIGITAL PROCESSOR FOR THE GUITAR WITH HEADPHONE OUTPUT - CAN I GO DIRECT FROM THE HEADPHONE OUTPUT INTO THE MIC INPUT ON THE COMPUTER OR WHAT? OR SHOULD I USE THE REGULAR OUTPUT THAT WOULD NORMALLY GO OUT INTO AN AMPLIFIER?

Re: RECORDING GUITAR LIVE ON ACID MUSIC 3.0

I have a hewlett packard 8670 computer and i was wondering what would i need besides the midi cord to connect my keyboard to the cpu

Re: RECORDING GUITAR LIVE ON ACID MUSIC 3.0

If you have a MIC input then you no doubt have a LINE input which would be more of an impedence match for the headphone output. Try it You won't hurt your computer. But if you want real happy sounds get rid of the 16 bit sound card. you can get into a 24 bit card for just under $200

Help - import drums

Yesterday I purchased MusicBall game from GenieSys (www.genevoice.com).
There is an example of drums party generation in this game. I created
my own model and now I have the incredible drums. Nobody can create
something like this manually. But it is the game :-( It plays my
drums only. Tell me please - how can I drag this notes to Cakewalk
to use it in my compositions?

one more question... sorry

does anyone know how to set fruityloops so it will record more than one midi note played at the same time, or do you just have to do multiple tracks?
thanks

Fruityloops... hopefully not too dumb of a question...

The problem I have been having is that there is a delay of maybe a quarter of a second between the time I hit a key on my midi keyboard, or even when I set it to use typing keyboard input. I have a soundblaster platinum 5.1, 384mb ram, P3 667 computer, running win98 with fruity 3. Anyone have any suggestions? much thanks.

Hello,
try changing the buffer length in the wave section. i.e go to option section and then do it.

at the sametime can you get me soundfont player without demo restrictions or may be a crack for it.
thanks

THIS THING SUCKS!!!!

I HATE THIS THING! IT IS A VIRUS!! IF YOU DO NOT PAY, IT WON'T LET YOU OPEN UP *ANY* MIDIS AT ALL, EVEN AFTER YOU HAVE DELETED THE GODDAMN THING!!!! >:O >:O

>:( THIS THING SUCKS SERIoUS ASS!!!!!!!!!

Computers suck

Sound's like the damn program changed the program assignment for MIDI files. You can get your system back by assigning MIDI file types to another MIDI program. This kind of error is common with programs that don't properly "un-install". Actually, they are improperly installing in my opinion if they modify user settings for any reason, but that's a philosophical programmer's point.

File types can be set using the Windows resident program: File manager. I forget what it's .EXE name is. Browse through your Windows directory for .EXE programs. It's in there. It is a program for renaming and moving files. It's old, but a bit more reliable than some of the same things in Windows/Explorer. Maybe somebody else remembers the name of the program?

Anyway, it's icon looks like a metal file cabinet. When you find it, you can enter in new file types or delete old one's. Sure you can do this in Windows, but Windows sometimes won't let you change things back to normal. It's just buggy like that.
