mp3 or wave

as you can see John I am new to this, I have cakewalk pro 8 and it dont seem to have a way to save wave files and I was told mpe 160 kbps gave better sound. whatever else u can clue me in on will be of great help.. thanks

lp, tape to CD........use mp3 or wave files ??

Cd will be played in home staro unit and car, so is it best to make the cd into mp3 or wave files ?? also when copying files from lp... use mp3 or wave file. I know wave files are larger but wich file system has best sound for car, home stero ?? thanks

MP3 is the format of choice

Ray, MP3 is the format you want... NOTE: for best sound with re space usage, always rips your MP3 at 192kbs

Mp3 CD players for the automobile or Rice Rocket the way to gooooo! For about $200 installed (very basic) you have many choices other than the two MP3 players listed below for your stoplight to stoplight racer.

Kenwood KDC-MP8017 CD/MP3 Receiver

Aiwa CDC-MP32 MP3 CD Receiver

If you have a big bucks, a upscale car MP3 player is a necessary install with amp and great speakers. You can do an in-dash replacement or hide it under the seat of your white PT Cruiser sporting ghost flames. Any one of the above players are far less expensive, than installing a complete computer with a 60 gig hard drive or a hybrid computer with trunk installed hard drive for music. Prices are all over the place, but let your fingers do the walking in the yellow pages under stereo installation and get a MP3 player for the candy machine on wheels.

If you have attended any car shows in your local area, or a weekend “show tell demo at the custom stereo shop” it is the MP3 player soundboard. The sound system that plays the best ear music always seems to be a tricked out MP3 player that vibrates more glass. Ray make your own weekly mix and forget about changing CD after CD for one song – then another CD for another selection, so on, and so on, and so on….

On a school budget; Wal-Mart had several MP3 portables for under $70 that would mount easily with a $15 dollar anodize aluminum bracket to keep the player off the floor mats. YES the Wal-Mart is an inexpensive solution for the car, using a MP3 Walkman style portable, with a cassette adapter so your portable can walk with you when you park the Rice Rocket. However, making your own MP3 Mix CD for the car is the choice.

In house players, there are numerous choices, but I suggest you wire your computer to the amp, play your music from the computer with the play list you want today. Prices are all over the place for these solutions, but string some wire and get a MP3 player for the candy machine on wheels.

Re: lp, tape to CD........use mp3 or wave files ??

there is some confusion Ray - alomost all cd players will only play cd's burned with .wav files - so mp3 as a format is out of the question. some new cd players play mp3 i believe which is very usefull as the cd would then store 10 times as much music! mp3 is a compression format so quality is lost when converting from .wav (full cd quality). So answer is rip in .wav + burn in .wav - if u want to hear anything that is.

How do I Burn cds ???

Do I have to save a play list on my harddrive before I can burn a cd ?? Then how do I Do the burning from there ?? Please help me !!!

Re: How do I Burn cds ???

How do I burn Music off the internet,
For FREE?!

Re: How do I Burn cds ??? maybe this will help

Presuming you are using a PC with windows and you have a CD R/W installed on your machine. You have software that was supplied that will do this function that came with your CD R/W or computer: Nero or Roxio's Software (Adaptec easy cd creator) note there are a number of other products that burn/write CDs just as well, but have found these are the most common supplied with computers, or new CD R/W. If you purchased a HP external CD R/W they have their own software for this that work well also.

It is very easy to learn to do this following the instruction or help files, either program performs well they have the ability to burn copies of most music CDs for backup purposes. They also will create a data CD if you have music in MP3 format on your computer.

There is another program I use to archive music from CDs on to my computer, it is called a ripper - meaning to copy the music from CD onto your computer. I use CDEX for that purpose. If you have music CDs using this program, you can copy your music collection to your computer. The program is free and can be downloaded from their Internet site. http://www.cdex.n3.net/ If you copy them from the CD storing them into MP3 format it can save a lot of space on your hard drive.

If you are using a computer that has windows XP, you need to post another message indicating win XP in your header so someone will be able to answer that question. – I have not used the CD burning software in XP yet so can not provide you with that information, at this time. If you are using an Apple, you need to post that in your header also to receive assistance with that operating system. Good luck Carrie… and happy recording.

Re: How do I Burn cds ???

i use Nero burning rom. With this u open the program, select 'create audio cd' then simply drag your .wav file songs into a box before selecting 'burn cd'. Every burning program will be essentially the same - you need a cd burner (hardware), cd burning software and songs in .wav format to create an audio cd. files need only be kept in a folder anywhere with nero.

Info on software piracy (completely legit, for a research projec

I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of any information on the piracy of music production software, i.e. Cubase, Logic et al.
I'm doing a module on Mass Media Technology for my degree and have to write an essay on Digital Piracy. The sort of info I need is what the company's are doing to prevent piracy, what are the impacts on the industry, how many people use pirated software etc. etc.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Info on software piracy (completely legit, for a research pr

Rob, let me relate a short story to you, about software usage. I do not know the program you are referring to, but this opinionated belief might be useful to you in your efforts. I worked in a bank, and at that time, WordPerfect was the word processor of choice, before windows appeared. I sorted the mail as a clerk while attending school. I became almost indispensable because of my user knowledge on the computers in this one horse bank. I was delighted to work for them, I could set my hours, and had access to the computers to complete my homework.

This bank had, a very important board of directors meeting approaching, and everyone was participating in the preparation of the many reports. Two days before the meeting, the dongle (copy protection scheme WordPerfect used to prevent piracy) failed on the Operations Officer computer.

He spent hours on the telephone, trying to explain the situation to the company of his pending peril if he could not get the document produced in time for the board of directors meeting. Well they finally were convinced and provided a backdoor password, which allowed him to produce the documents. I was able to work alot of overtime, which made my life monetary easy for several months afterwards.

The day after the Board meeting the bank purchased, 30 copies of Microsoft Word, and deleted all references to WordPerfect from all the computer in that bank. During the next few weeks, lots of employee’s took the software home, and replaced WordPerfect on their home computers. I did several installs at the bank officer’s homes, which also increased my income. Microsoft word was not copy-protected software, like WordPerfect. As I continued my schooling everyone was changing to word, it was available, every one had a copy it seemed.

Within several years, very few offices used WordPerfect, Microsoft pirate copies were everywhere. It took many hours to become proficient in using a word processors, during at that time. Exiting the main program was the only way to access help files. Word was not as good of a program as its competitor, WordPerfect, but word could be installed numerous times or on all machines. Yes, and the program had revisions, as people upgrades some purchased the program, other just installed the new version bringing the disk home.

My first job after graduation was in an insurance company and I watched as the company purchased two copies of the word and 100 machines in that office became the recipient of these two programs. The learning curve of software was an effort, but many people became a word user. I saw this change in software occur over night it seems looking back at computer history. The users of this product distributed pirate versions, and as software use in office legitimized, purchase of upgrades made the investment in word required.

This advantage of not being copy protected, in a market against copy protected software their was no question who was the winning company.

Intel did not make motherboards, until Compaq Computer made their mother board propriety. This change killed that portion of Compaq income and created a bonanza for Intel’s income.
If you give it away, easily the users learn to use it, and will purchases upgrades, because they do not want to learn a new system. In your project to write an essay on Digital Piracy of computer programs, I make the following suggestion. Take a look to easy an illegal copy, verses the difficulty for a user to learn another program instead purchasing an upgrade continuing with the application the users feels comfortable using.

It is a narrow fence for a company to walk, allowing enough piracy and at the same time create a need to buy an upgrade. Napster is almost the same for the RIAA, but with a different twist. Over all music CD sales increased, not the pop promoted music, but the sales of many different music genres CD suddenly began to move off the shelves of retailers. The word of mouth, music sampling through Napster was the biggest seller of computers, broadband Internet service, CD burners, and CD sales. One day Napster will become a required business study, as the largest advertising medium that occurred in business, yet one of the biggest benefactor shot themselves in the foot. Time will tell if they had that foot in their mouth, when the gun fired in the halls of consumer spending.

Enough, but I hope my poor English composition, does not distract from the ideas I have tried to present, seep through.

Re: Info on software piracy (completely legit, for a research pr

Apart from asking the companies concerned, you should make sure to track down some independent sources. I think there was/is a company called Copyright Control Services that might be of help. Do a Google search for 'em.

But i fear you're going to have trouble getting reliable statistics. No one knows how many people use warez. Some people don't even know they're using it. true.

Best of luck!

Re: Info on software piracy (completely legit, for a research pr

Since your requirement is specific to particular programs, the usual sources are likely to be of little use, since they tend to look at software piracy as a whole, not by individual programs. The only thing I can suggest is that you contact the writers of Cubase and so on. However, I doubt very much they'll tell you what they're doing to prevent it.

cubase vs logic - a can of worms is opened...

hey all,

i'm sure this discussion has been done to death, but i am currently setting up a mini-studio and i am trying to decide between cubase and logic as a sequencer.

i am running a mac g3, i have a korg controller kbd and a midisport 2x2. i am also intending on purchasing the protools m-box for any audio recording/mixing, however i am essentially operating as a solo artist (composer/kbds) and i intend to sequence everything except the vocals. bearing all that in mind, i am just after advice regarding software sequencers, software synths and all plug-ins that may assist. i have used cubase a little in the past, but i am open to all opinions.

i know this is a very broad question, but i don't want to make any expensive wrong decisions!

cheers

Hahahah... you will want to check out the link i have before you make your final decision. Personally, I haven't used Logic too much, but a friend of mine uses it constantly, and found Emagic to have excellent technical support. I did some recordings with him on it, and I never got a chance to use it much on my own. The signal just seemed a bit too complex at the time.

However, at this point, I think it's probably a bit better on a mac than Cubase. I also think that the signal routing IS more advanced on Logic. Steinberg is making Nuendo better for signal routing, but Nuendo is a whole other ball game.

On the other hand, Cubase is nice because of its universal support for plug ins of the VST and DirectX type. I have used Cubasis extensively, and have noticed how it's similar to and different from Cubase. The only things I don't like about Cubase/Cubasis is the lack of a good sample-accurate zoom function on the multitrack audio grid. Sometimes my track editing gets really complex, but I still need to edit as tracks and not in the external editor. Also, Cube seems to have trouble with some plug-ins and how it tries to remember them. Cube also had trouble with some of my soundcard drivers (always switching to mono without my permission). And I wasn't always able to monitor properly. The .REX file support actually bugged me, because I often like to mess with BPM settings of wave files and I sometimes DON'T want them to automatically match. Cuba kept fighting me on this.

The more I think about it, the more problems I remember with Cube. Setting tracks up to be stereo instead of mono was tricky without a template. Some projects would lose track of their sound files. I DID have to reinstall Cube a few times, but it always restarted ok then.

I really like the grid functions on Cube, but I like them better on ProTools and DDClip Pro. DDClip Pro has a really fantastic way of using markers. I don't know if DDCLip is on mac yet. Too bad if it isn't. It's my favorite 32/96kHz system, and it can use DirectX plugins. It sounds great, and is VERY easy to use for overdubbing. The video detailed editing is a nice touch, as are the dithering options and built-in effects and EQ and custom colors and stuff.

OK, so I'm wandering off topic. I suggest for your mac, that you stick with Logic Audio, and get a copy of ProTools free in the mail on a CD-ROM. You might be interested in Deck, and Bias Peak, which now seem to support VST plug-ins. Those programs could be really cool. ProTools is really powerful and is around in most professional recording studios, so you'll probably want a copy around even if you seldomly use it. It's also nice if you like some TDM plug-ins.

So what the hell am I trying to say????

Get Logic because I remember a lot of glitches with Cube, even though I really like how it renders and loads up plug-ins so nicely. Logic seems really stable, and the company seems a bit more professional and less consumer-oriented, somehow. Get ProTools (free or otherwise) also, because it will help you stay current, and will be able to do things that your other programs can't, even if it's just loading up TDM plug-ins.

I do think that Logic could be tricky if you don't have enough RAM, but that's because it renders effects so nicely.

I would spend a lot of time making sure you get the extra junk cleared out of your system folder and removing unneeded control panels/extensions/etc.

Well, I'm not thinking too clearly today. Usually I give a more definative answer. Oh well.

my sound card is installed and its saying that it is not

Re: need help with sound card - we need more info to help you

Your frustration is showing in your double post. Gecko asked you a couple of question... That needs to be answered for someone to assist you with specific answers.

1. Machine PC or Apple, operating system & version, and sound card manufacture, model number.

If you can supply this information, I am certain some one will have a ready soultion, to solve your problem. I had a very difficult time installing an inexpensive sound card a while back. It was an easy card to install, but the user needed to know if I was installing in a 133 or a 166 because it needed a different set of drivers.

I went round and around with that installation, until I explained it was a 133mhz to the person helping me with my installation of the Yamaha sound card. I was there and was spitting angry until I provide more information the the person helping me. Please provide more information. I am certain with more info your sound card installation problems will receive quick follow-up.

This is a good board with very experienced users that have experienced your problems before, but they need enough information to assist you.

JR

: my sound card is installed and its saying that it is not

Listen to what your computer is telling you about your soundcard

You probably need to re-install the soundcard drivers (drivers are software instructions for the computer on how to work with hardware). There are usually lots and lots of drivers involved for sound cards once they're installed. There are mixers, driver emulators, input drivers, output drivers, and MIDI drivers are separate from audio drivers.

Check and make sure that you are installing the correct driver and the correct version. Sometimes on a CD-ROM there will be drivers for other cards than what you have.

Also, check to make sure that your system BIOS (if you have a PC) is set correctly. Many have a setting for using or ignoring MIDI or audio.

Also, if you are using a PC, you need to be sure that the soundcard is getting its own, unique IRQ #. An IRQ # is basically an ID # so that the system can respond to the device. IRQ = Interrupt Request. Soundcards are often assigned IRQ 5 or 10.

It can be tricky dealing with IRQ's because there are only so many, and most of them MUST be assigned to specific devices. Also, some devices share IRQ numbers.

There is a really helpful book that explains how to solve these problems. It's called IRQs, DMAs, and

burn old records to CD

Have Sony Vio RX540 how can I burn my old records to CD's. Just learning to work with the machine. So far view battles won. Thank for any help. (Useless to try Sony for help)

Re: burn old records to CD - See these programs -

WOW – Nice machine and it did not drain your pocket book…

1.2 GHz Celeron on 0.13u processor
256 KB L2 Cache
100 MHz FSB
256 MB PC133 SDRAM (normally installed)
2 DIMM slots(512 MB PC133 SDRAM maximum;2x256MB)
60 GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive
Intel 815E Integrated Graphics
1 AGP and 3 PCI slots (1 PCI slot already used for fax/modem)
4 USB ports (2 front and 2 rear)

Great specifications - a decent machine. Now to answer your question - you need some software -

If you look section above "Looking for music software? Over 4,000 downloads are available on this site. 44 categories of software are just a click away!" You will find a number of very good programs that will accomplish what you want.

Click through to Audio Recording and have a look at these two programs: LP Recorder 4.1 - and the co-program LP ripper 4.1. These very reasonable priced programs that do what you want to achieve.

The recorder does just that it records from your LPs. Just plug your amp/turntable into your sound card and let it record the entire side of your LP. Then use LP Ripper to separate and edit each song from the entire recorded side of the LP... Ripper has some decent editing functions and works with the Windows XP - Read some of the notes posted for these programs. Purchase the programs through this site it help support the hitsquad message board...

You also want to make sure your record input is "line in"
Gecko

Re: Recording from cassette . . . no sound

1. Is the casstte deck connected to the LINE IN on the sound card

2. Is LINE IN muted (double-click on speaker in taskbar)

3. Get another program and try it. If neither work, then it's an input problem. If not, then the problem's with CEdit

Re: HELP! Drum's pan.

If you are Cakewalk user and you have 2-ports MIDI sintesizer:
SB-Live, Audigy, Gig ets. try Geniesys MFX Plug-in for
CWPA8,9 / Sonar "Drum Scatter" (www.genevoice.com). You will
be able to change panning of 32 different drums
dinamically (by controllers) or manually (as in mixer).

Music Format

What is a RAM format for music files?
How is such a file created?
Please send me the answers at your earliest.
Many thanks. Narasimhan, India

Re: Music Format

A RAM file is a small text file that contains the address of the file that you want people to listen to. <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/news/9904_106/">This page</a> should help.
