OUTBOARD COMPRESSOR

Hi!

I have a compressor I want to use with my sound card. I need to process the audio in real time. I have programs like Cool Edit pro and cubase. I can use either of these cards: SB LIVE or STEINGBERG 24/96. How do I configure the card and set up the software. Sounds pretty simple, but I'm not sure how to do it!

Thanks!

Converting Mpga Files to MP3 for Macs

Hello Intelligent people can someone please help me-- I need to know how I can convert MPGA files I got throught Internet Explorer to MP3's that I can burn on a Mac..what program do I need and where can I get it thanks!!!

Re: Converting Mpga Files to MP3 for Macs

I use Quicktime Pro for all those sorts of conversions. There are more than likely others but Quicktime covers many different formats including the funkier MPEG 4 AAC audio compression which sounds better (still deciding personally) and is smaller due to being able to get away with lower bit rates.

Getting a flat response from my PC

Yeah I know it ain't really possible. The problem is that my mixes sound fantastic when I am at my PC and asstastic everywhere else.
I am stuck with the following gear and cannot spend any money right now: SBLive! Value on WinXP with Cambridge 4-point Surround speakers.

My question:
I want to impose an EQ curve on these speakers to get a response I can actually EQ and mix with. I have thought of several ways to achieve this with various software and hardware, but I don't know how to begin setting the curve. I need some advice on how to decide what frequencies to cut and by how much. I don't have any money to spend.

Re: Getting a flat response from my PC

rimmers advice is good but u can do this - use winamp or the like which has a big eq section to 'set a standard', play a pro CD/wav rip in winamp and alter the EQ till it sounds how u like it. then u just need to re-alter your sequencer master EQ after listening to your exported traks thru winamp/whatever with the curve u know sounds good with a pro cd.

u will end up with a fixed EQ setting which u can apply to your traks before exporting knowing it will EQ them up right. meanwhile just mix yer tracks without this EQ setting imposed as u are now. so essentially all u gotta do it keep doing what yer doing but find that EQ export setting.

Re: Getting a flat response from my PC

I personally think you would be wasting your time. I haven't heard you speaker system but I can guess what it might sound like from the picture I just saw of it.

I am not sure where you got the idea of 'imposing an Eq curve' from. The reality is, the reason your mixes don't work is that your speakers are probably far from flat.

The way to monitor in a studio is to have the flattest full range monitors and a tuned ear to those monitors. Even a good engineer will have to get used to a new monitor set.

You could buy (I know you have no money, but in the future) some active flat studio reference nearfields and put those in an untreated room (most peoples rooms at home) and still have some issues which you would have to iron out from experience. Nothing is perfect unless you have that perfect monitoring environment with at least a couple of different monitoring options including boom boxes and then like.

If I were you, I would get the mix to where I liked it on the monitors, burn it to CD and then listen to it on other systems. Observe what doesn't sound right compared to a commercial CD of a similar music style. Go back and make some eq adjustments and volume adjustments to the mix itself. Burn and try again. Once you have it to where you think it works (seriously try it on lots of different systems, car, other peoples houses) you will have to learn that the sound that is coming out of your computer speakers is right, although it sounds wrong. It's a horrible way to mix.

If anyone suggests that you get a graphic equaliser with a spectrum analyser and mic then you are seriously wasting your time. There is nothing to be gained from fiddling with speakers at that price level. They are throw ins for games and DVD's and are okay at a pinch. I would rather use my Hifi for mixing and much rather a decent set of headphones (against the general mixdown rules I know but, plastic computer monitors... no way... ;0))

TStar Mixer

I am a novice at editing and recently dowloaded TStar for the purpose of mixing in music and voice tracks.

My question is, "How can I record my voice onto the Tstar program in order to mix it in with music?" I plugged a mic into the computer - that did not work. I recorded a voice track on a Sony digital recorder. I can load and save the track onto my Sony Voice Editor but I can't get it into the TStar program.

Any helpful hints?

downloaded movies on a cdr need converter to work on dvd player

Ive downloaded movies from the net and I need to know what program to use to convert them on to a cdr to work on a dvd player

Re: downloaded movies on a cdr need converter to work on dvd pla

If you don't have a DVD movie capable burner, then the chances are you could get away with the VCD (Video CD) encoder. The quality isn't so good and it might take some time to create. You have to check whether the DVD player can handle VCD's as well as I don't think all of them do. Maybe just the older ones, who knows..

There are VCD producing apps around. Which one, depends on your computer. I have done this a couple of times using a Mac G4 with Toast Titanium.

DP 3 Patch Listing

I am having a difficult time trying to create a patch list for the new Yamaha PSR2000 for my DP3.0.
I am using Digital Performer 3.0, and for 3 days I have tried to create a patch list from scratch but no luck. Is there anyone out there who could give me a step by step on how to create this list. Unforfunately, Digital Performer doesn't have a patch list for this, not even in the soon to be released DP 3.1.

Thank you.
Manny

That's the Mac version. There might be a Windows version, I think there is but I haven't looked.

The company make another package which might suit. I think they both do what you want..

Re: sound fonts

Hi Josh,

If you're using a Creative sound card, I'll be able to help you with sound fonts. The program you'll use is called 'Vienna SF Studio'. I use this quite a lot myself, and find it very good.

You can contact me via my site below (use the 'Contact' link).

CD Burning Question

I like making cd's. I've got a whole whack of albums in my possession; nowhere near Gray's collection, but noteworthy none the less. What I like to do from this is make my own 'best of' collections. Like, taking all the U2 or Radiohead albums, ripping them to my hard-drive, and making compilations of sorts. I find it more convenient than dragging my whole CD collection in the car with me and switching CD's all the time (mind you, I could get a CD changer in my automobile, but I'm a cheap bastard).

So, I've always used Nero to burn my CD's. I always thought it did a bang-up job, but you know what: now I want more! I'm tired of having 15 isolated songs on a CD, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a program that allow you to mix songs into each other, more or less let tracks overlap at the beginning and end so that you have one continuous flow of music? I've done some searching on the net, but nothing really seems to have caught my attention (could it be my short attention span??? Nah...).

...what was I saying again?

Sweet

Thank you much for the responses. I will have to check those programs out, quite appreciated!

WORKING WITH 2 HARD DISKS PLEASE HELP!!!

I have a Mac G3 Powerbook (OS 9.2) which I bought from a friends brother in NY. For one reason or another he split the Hard Disks, so on my desktop there is hard disk 1 and hard disk 2. The problem is that I need more memory (GB) on disk 1. I have like 37mb of available space on disk 1 but like 5.63 GB on disk 2. What I want to do is put more space from disk 2 on disk 1 or combine the available space of both of them on 1 hard disk. sSomebody please help.

Not music related, however....

Get Partition Magic. One slick progy.

http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/

You would probably find it cheaper in stores.

Re: Not music related, however....

I've used partition magic when installing another HD on my mates computer, it was slow but worked first time... It's Windows only though...

There are a few partition moving apps for the Mac but I don't recall any of them. The problem is, the person who created those partitions did them to an empty drive. I am not under the impression it is easy or even possible to adjust their size. It's going to be a matter of backing up, initializing the drive (yes, you will lose all your data) and then selecting the number of partitions you want (if any) and their relative sizes.

I recommend two partitions. One for OS9 and then other for OSX (if you don't use it, you should think about using it at some point). This way, you can dual boot from either OSX or OS9.

I will try and locate some of the application names for moving partitions but I suspect you would be better off with a backup and then initialize the drive..
