Just in case you didn't know- you can do this using
your computer: <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/news/1316/">Tutorial: Cassette to MP3/WAV</a>.

sample rates

I am having a lot of problems with sample rates that nopbody seems to be able to help me with.

i having been trying to cut a CD for about two years. I have had no problems at all with the music but every time I try to lay down the vocals there is a problem. It seems to record OK until I try to save it and then it goes really haywire. The music stays the same but the vocal goes to triple time making everything wako.

Can some one help?

Guess work..

Ron,

You have left too many stones unturned for us. What are you recording to? what are you saving from? What software do you find the vocals are increasing in speed?

Changing the sample rate to whatever rate the other instruments are using will change the speed. Why are you having to change the sample rate?? if you are recording all the instruments with the same sample rate into some sort of multitrack then you shouldn't need to.

dynamic range and frequency

howdy,
i'm doing some research on analog vs digital recording and i'm having trouble finding information of the frequency and dynamic range of the (analog) cassette (65 dB?) AND the ranges of the LP (vinyls). Any links or info would be appreciated! help!

Thanks everyone,

Lizzy P.

Information overload

Cassette frequency range is up to about 16kHz and yes, about 60dB dynamic range. Type IV (metal high bias) cassettes are about the upper limit on a demagnetized (degaussed) and contact-cleaned tape deck. There exists a book published by Yamaha which is a great technical guide. <A HREF="http://search.barnesandnoble.com/textbooks/booksearch/isbninquiry.asp?userid=6V2CAF5Q67&isbn=0881889008">Here is the link</A>

There's also a book called Audio Measurement Techniques which is intended for technicians, but also contains significant details on analog and digital fidelity issues and stats.

Be aware that LP and cassettes will have similar stats and that their corresponding analog recievers influence their operation as will mastering techniques and tools of the 1970's and 1980's. Contemporary recievers aren't really designed to be compatible with cassettes and vinyl in terms of frequency content. A complete old system playing old music is often better at reproducing music than a complete new system playing old music. Speakers, recievers, mastering, cables, grounding techniques, power cords and equalization options have all changed in many deep ways over the decades.

You might also want to include issues such as crosstalk, phase distortion, harmonic distortion, intermodulation distortion (big issue for speakers), and noise modulation (issue for digital systems). The second book i mentioned above, deals with all of these.

Another funny issue.... Redbook CD audio claims to be 16bit resolution, but if you study CD player design, plenty of CD players actually use less than 16 bits and use as few as 12. EFM should be looked up. (Eight to Fourteen modulation) EFM is not something I totally understand, but I know it's common in CD players and denotes that less than 16bits are sometimes used. It has a bit to do with dither, noise, and oversampling, etc. Another strike against digital.

Also, people can actually hear about 120 dB of changes, but most digital systems don't support that.

it's about 6 dB for every bit of resolution. Sampling rates are also still not good enough to distinguish between waveforms unless you get to about 10 times the highest audio frequency to be delt with. This is coincidentally the same factor at which analog bias is achieved (10 times). So 2.05 times (Nyquist frequency) is really inadequate despite what you may read in older things. Listen to 20kHz square wave and then a 20kHz sine wave, and you'll hear the difference. A sampling rate of 44.1 can only reproduce 20kHz squarewaves or at least triangular waves, not sine waves. Analog filtering is what makes audio sound less harsh and more natural.

Re: Information overload

wow, thank you so much for that. interesting that older players are better for sound quality.

portible studio help

I'm looking for a means to record 4 track DAW simultaneously with either a laptop (can't be done w/USB 1.1) or a portastudio that has non destructive (no compression)abilities. I can't find a DAW controller that uses USB 2.0 or Fire-wire and at least 4 digital outputs. Even all the 8-10 track portastudios only record 2 tracks simultaneously and they only output to computer in 2 track formate. All I need is a company name that carries something with 4 digital outputs to a USB 2 or Fire-wire. I don't want a PCM laptop card type because it would be limited to a laptop only.

Tks 4 look'n, and especially 4 sugesting!

Re: Marlene Dietrich

Just go to <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/sheetmusic/">http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/sheetmusic/</a> and do a search in the sheetmusicplus box on the right hand side of the page. There's stuff to check out.

You can include basic HTML in your posts, so to make a

I have Nero Mpeg2 encoder and want to change a vcd into Svcd (Mpeg2) format but when i change it to Mpeg2 format its too big to burn to a normal CDR-80 minute. I need to be able to split it so it only encodes half of the vcd at a time so i can burn it to a cdr then do the second half n burn it to a cdr. How can i do this?? Or any other help!! Thanxs!! NEED HELP: Casio CTK-671 and PC software

First, I know nothing about working with keyboards and software: so any help will be greatly appreciated.
I have a casio CTK-671 and want to be able to create music, add drums, record it, mix it, add effects with the use of software. I have sound forge and cubase, but don't know how to get started. I've connected the midi cables to my PC so that Cubase was able to record sound from the keyboard; however, it would not play drum sounds and instead any drum sound I'd play from the keyboads, sounded like a piano sound coming out of the computer speakers. On Sound Forge, I could not figure out how to get the software to record. Are there any special settings that need to be set up within the software before it can work with a keyboard?
You may ask why I don't use Casio software that is offered free on their site: well, it is not compatible with Windows XP. So I'm hoping that one of the softwares I do have could provide the same function.
*help please*
Thanks-Asche

Re: NEED HELP: Casio CTK-671 and PC software

I have a 573,and i use several programs like acid pro, cubase, absynth and i cannot get them to work at all.I think i have tried every setting there is on the keyboard and on the software, still no luck.Im just trying to use the keys on my keyboard to better use synth software like Absynth.I found thats its really hard to find someone that knows alot about midi at all.
Any suggestion would be nice.Thx

Converting Real Audio Files

I'd like to be able to use a (hopefully) free program to convert a real audio file (.ra or .ram format) into a .wav or .mp3 format. Is there a free program out there that will allow me to do that. Please help! You can send me an email: jason@creativegrowth.com or post here. Thanks very much.

HOW TO MAKE MIDI - SOUD MORE AUTHENTIC ?

What I mean is that I downloaded some
instrumental music from: http://www.grafix.net/cebolo/midi/index.htm
and the sound seems very authentic. I am just
wondering how this sound could be achieved.
`Thanks RIMMER for your effort.` Manuel

Re: HOW TO MAKE MIDI - SOUD MORE AUTHENTIC ?

To be honest, I downloaded a zip and listened to a few and they didn't sound that great. A lot of midi files are quite stagnant as it seems that once people have found that 'Quantise to 16beat button' there is no return. Some of it's nice but I wouldn't say it was that great.

If you think about it, a midi file as a song is just a series of recorded notes which then play a GM compatible synth so the synth knows what type of instruments it should be using. The midi information could be anything from Chopin played with no note adjustments and with the right piano, should sound the same as the original played piece. I find a lot of midi files don't have this reality and most of them like I say sound robotic from quantisation. I wouldn't say these are thoughtlessly done at all, but the ones I listened to are definately on the way towards being machined.

Re: HOW TO MAKE MIDI - SOUD MORE AUTHENTIC ?

music centre has awesome midi editing potentials as does yamaha sequencer. you just need a sequencer with extensive midi tweaking/fx facilities.
