Re: Converting CD tracks to Wav or MP3 files

You can download shareware version of AltoMP3 maker from this site. With unregistered version you can rip first 12 songs of the CD. To convert Mp3 to .wav you can use winamp by selecting the little icon in the top left corner and go:
Options->Preferences->Output
change it to
Nullsoft Disk writter plug-in......etc
select the folder you want the file converted into, open the file and play. Few thing to remember : You won't hear the song while it's converting it, if you have more than one song in playlist it will go onto the next one and it will convert it to, make sure that 'REPEAT' button is off so it doesn't keep converting over and over and over... get my drift? After you're done go back into output and change it back to what it was before.

CD+G Backups

Hi Guys,

Im new to this list and find it fascinating. I came onto it by virtue of a search I did on the internet trying to find out how I can backup my Karaoke CD+G's. I followed the advice I found here and boughjt an HP 8230e CD Writer and downloaded CDR-Win. Unfortunately, it doesn't look as though CDR-Win recognises my writer as one that will read and record CD+G's :-(. What am I doing wrong? Goldenhawk are wriggling at the moment and HP assure me their writer WILL copy CD+G's.

Incidentally I have also downloaded a program called CloneCD (anyone know it?) and have attempted to copy raw data onto another CD. Im at work right now but will attempt to play the newly burned CD on my Karaoke when I get home...I know the audio tracks have come accross ok, its just the graphics Im concerned about.

Any advice, greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Colin

Starting out with software based music

Hey,

I am interested in making dance and techno type music on my Mac. I have messed around with ReBirth, and it was pretty fun, but I want something where I'm not limited to just those synths. I have Cubase, but it looks really confusing and I'm not sure what to do with it. Basically I need to know what programs I need to start off. I think I need Cubase for a midi sequencer, I already have Rebirth, should I get recycle? I want to be able to add samples and stuff too...
I dunno, I'm confused. I don't have any real synths or anything, I want it to stay strictly on my computer.

thanks,
-Colin

wav files on a Mac

Hi,
I'm a pc based guy but use a mac in work. I've tried converting my mp3s to wav files and then burning them onto cd. If i do this on a pc they play fine but not with the mac. It will play on the mac but not on the sereo.

Is there a file extension that needs to used for a mac?

Thanks in advance,
Allan.

Re: wav files on a Mac

If you're burning them on your PC as an "audio CD" and using WAV files, there shouldn't be any problem. The standard audio format for Macintosh is AIFF. That's the Mac version of WAV files. You might want to try saving your files as AIFF's and then burning them. I think that would do it.

Downloading Napster for Mac

I've been trying to download Napster a thousand times yet I get an error when the file downloaded is 100k and above. This doesn't happen to any of my downloads. Would you tell me the problem and how can I solve it.

Download WINMX ...NAPSTER is past. Download.....

.... WINMX. NAPSTER is dead. WINMX is new NAPSTER. You'll find all the songs there plus you can connect to the napsters and dozens of other servers with music.

Direct X 7 to 8 ..good or bad ?

Will I lose anything upgrading from directx 7 to directx 8 ? ...I have seen some comments to suggest that it may not be such a good idea....Would appreciate some comments on the subject

Re: Direct X 7 to 8 ..good or bad ?

At the moment there isn't much that needs DirectX 8. My previous experience with 8
was that it caused problems with some of my older software.

Until it becomes necessary, I'd stick with 7

Copying CD's & D audio

I'm having problems copying CD's. First off, when I try to play an audio CD (store bought) on ym computer, it doesn't work, it plays, but no noise. When I set it up to copy with Easy CD Creator, it says it 'cannot prepare track' and cancels the copy. So you see, this is a problem, if anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot.

MPEG Layer-3 Codec

Does anyone know of an exe which will load the above
codec on a w98 system. I'm a software developer. I
need to be able to legally include it on my distribution
CD, and install it via my setup program, so that my avi

help on burning a cd.....

hey, I changed my Mp3's to .wav files, but now I need to learn how to actually burn the CD. I have this program called CeQuadrat just!burn, that burns CD's from other CD's, but I don't know what I need to burn my .wav files....what do I download? Thanks!

Re: help on burning a cd.....

i have that cheesy software too, you must have a compaq.
choose just!audio and then after the spaceship gets done spinning around the cd (i'm not kidding people) click on 'file system', locate the .wav's you want to burn and drag them to the bottom window. when that's done click record.

good luck and you might want to look into getting nero.

music software

I am looking for a music notation program that is relatively simple to use. I have a program that is so complex it is ridiculous and the manual is overly technical and tells you to do certain steps but not how to do them. Anybody got anything?

I use Voyetra's Digital Orchestrator Pro.
It is available on line for a resonable price and is easy to use. It comes with a series of videos that explain how to use the program and it is very user friendly.

Making Karaoke CDs

I'm looking to make some new karaoke cds for a friend. She's got a karaoke machine, I've got a cd burner and from what I've read it looks like CDRWin will work. My question is this, what kinds of files am I looking for? Do I need CDG files or something else? I need to know what files to download and then burn before I start all this. Also - any pointers to sites where I can find whatever type of file I need?

Thanks for any help!

Re: Making Karaoke CDs

It's not the file format you need to worry about, it's finding music that has been recorded especially for karaoke use - without the vocal part. It's almost impossible to remove the vocals from normal music. If you search the internet, there are several sites that specialise in karaoke music.

VST Latency driving me crazy...any suggestions...please

Recording vocals into Cubase VST version 3, once recorded I'm wasting loads of time having to move them back into the right place as there is a delay. Is there any way I can avoid this. Someone I know who uses logic has arranged it so that you hear the latency when you sing but the recording comes out in the right place. Please help, I'm pretty desperate!

Monitoring...

I have found that it's often the addition of monitoring a sound while you are playing it that makes it confusing on the performer. If you are singing then, don't monitor the vocal as it will put you off.

You can calculate latency by playing a simple drum sound on the beat and then record it as an audio track as well. Line up the midi information and the audio recorded information and work out how far out the latency is. The result will be relevant to the source you are using and that may change depending whether your source is coming from a main mixing desk or an acoustic source. Monitoring the sound will create latency to your ears so calculate with your eyes where possible.

Once the delay has been calculated, you could advance all the recorded tracks so as when you sing, you will hear everything a little earlier than it should be, (other than the vocal of course) offsetting the latency. Alternatively, buy the lowest latency soundcard you can find and rid yourself of the problem... Or at least, most of it...

Re: VST Latency driving me crazy...any suggestions...please

Sounds like you aren't using an ASIO compatible soundcard. Go to the Cuabse.net forums and ask for help there. They are experts.

This dumb Adeptec

I copied a lot of my cd's on to ny hardrive, in mp3 or other formats. I am unable to make these into a WAV file. Can someone help me here???

Re: This dumb Adeptec

There are several free programs which can convert MP3 to WAV. I use one called CDex, which works pretty well, but there are others around.

Discman wont play recorded CD

Sup peeps,
heres my problem, all my recorded CD's or the first one or two I attempted work fine on my home stereo yet wont play on my Discman. the CD just spins and constantly jumps... I burnt them using Nero 5 onto regular 650Mb CD-R's
any help would be appreciated.
thx
Chad.

Re: Discman wont play recorded CD

It may be that the laser pickup in the Discman isn't up to the job.
Some CD players simply aren't capable of reading information off CD-Rs,
as it's not recorded the same way as a normal audio CD.

Andy

Re: Discman wont play recorded CD

right thx...

Thx for the prompt reply, so is there anyway I could go around this, close to replacing my discman ?

Re: Discman wont play recorded CD

The only thing I can suggest is that you try some of the special audio grade CD-R discs and clean the laser pickup on your Discman using a CD lens cleaner (a disc with small brushes on it.)

Sending MP3 files.

Dear Sir Madam'
can you help me? How do you send an mp3 file over the net, I have a Mac Powerbook G3 250mkts 3gigs 97ram. It was going take 15 minutes to send a 3.7 Song to a Friend
as an attatchment, Is there a quicker way with the resouces I have.

Thank You

Re: Sending MP3 files.

You could get some free web space from
verica.net or somewhere similar. OK it would still take the same time to upload the mp3 to your webspace account, but then you could send
friends a link to the file in an email, rather than an attachment. Dead useful if you want to send an MP3 to more than one friend, as you'll only have to upload it once!

Re: Sending MP3 files.

Chances are you've got the MP3 file encoded at 128Kbps. If you want to sacrifice a bit of quality for bandwidth, re-encode at 96Kbps. if this answer doesn't make sense to you. I'd read up some more on MP3. You'll find a good page here.

Your other option would be to convert the file to WMA, which will create a smaller file at around the same audio quality. Programs like WMA decoder/encoder might be worth checking out.

Re: Sending MP3 files.

Not really. If you posted the MP3 on a website, it'd still take 15 minutes to upload it to the server.
Sending it by E-mail, as you say, will take a similar amount of time. Unless you change your modem for
something faster (not cheap), the cheapest way would probably be to put it on a CD and mail it.
