I have deleted Nero Wave Editor. It does not work, is full of bugs that their website does not address. I would like to thank the creators of this digital disaster for wasting an hour of my time.

A sound module is a hardware device such as the Roland Sound Canvas, or basically any hardware synthesizer or sampler that happens not to have an actual keyboard. Since MIDI sound modules are kind of out of style, you can probably find some decent ones used. I suggest you browse around at synthzone.com to get some ideas. then enter them as keyword searches on ebay.com

I used to have the M-Audio Delta Dio 2496, which is like the Audiophile without a MIDI port. I had the exact same problem as you. Yes, it is the lack of sound generator on the M-Audio PCI card which causes this. One potential solution is to deal exclusively with VST instruments. A few VST instruments can even load up WAVE files. This is an elegant solution since VST instruments can be downloaded for free from lots of places and so can WAVE files. Cubasis can deal effectively with VST instruments and effects. If I were you, I'd try to sell or trade Cakewalk for Cubasis or Cubase. (Cubasis is the lite version of Cubase).

Check that link. By using a program called VDMsound-2.0.4-WinNT-i386.msi you might get Impulse Tracker working under Win XP.

I agree with Rimmer. Also, you should acquire as many VST effects as possible. A few of them can be quite good at mucking up voice. Typically it's those effects that use radical filters, resonance, ring modulation, pitch shifiting or FFT tricks. If you layer the effects, you can get heavy results.

A simple way to change voice content is with parametric EQ, pitch shifting, and compresssion (to keep the radical EQ from getting out of hand). After you do that, anything like ring modulation or detune or controlled feedback will just enhance the effect.

it's also useful to be able to take one effect and mix it back into the original source. if you keep doing this, you'll keep growing new effects. try experimenting with polarity too, for nice cancellation effects.

I think Quicktime Pro lets you save the audio from an MPEG. There are probably other ways...

Although I never recommend Audio to Midi convertors, I have had moderate success using the facility in Logic Audio to convert a monophonic audio signal to midi information. It's hit and miss to say the least so if accuracy is what you are looking for, you maybe disappointed.

There are some stand alone programs that attempt this tricky task, what they are called I don't know. Check out the file area on this website as it has some in there 'somewhere'.
