Re: How do I make a kicking BASS/DRUM for my dance music songs.

Well I do agree with the person who mentioned stomper. It is by far the best bass drum creator for dance music and possibly others though I only produce psychadelic hard trance it seems to have its uses in aphex twin style music and all other dance genres. with stomper you my notice that it actually works like a compressor in a lot of ways though it may take you time to understand that. If you want to see what I meen try compressing an uncompressed bass drum heavily with a slow attack and fast release it yields similar results though you will get better results with stomper. I would say the reason it is not in the studio for all dance music producers is that they have found some other way which is way more complicated and most producers stick to what they know. As music software become more and more popular to use especially in dance genres stomper is becoming a standard for producers like way out west who calim to use it a heck of alot for there bass drums. from the looks of it the program fruity loops has what they call a club bass drum which really lookes like it was crearted with stomper. If you are having trouble with your bass drums punching through stomper is your awnser. Now bass instruments are tougher. After you solve the bass drum problem it will help a lot with the synth bass or analog bass oyu may be using because once you get the bass drum to punch through better its all a matter of some creative compression and eq. If you are not apt to programming synths samples will do and eq will probably do but dont overlook compression learn about it study it is makes a nice difference. And remember get some good studio monitors like yamaha ns10m's and learn them by listening to your favorite tunes through them. Remember your music is only as good as it translates to the outside world meaning car stereos lo fi speaker systems not just beefy audio systms have fun anf finish track don't get to boggled down with all the tech stuff or youll nevfer finish anything.

good luck

Re: How do I make a kicking BASS/DRUM for my dance music songs.

Other than Nigels suggestion of doubling the kit with another kit, then there are a few things you can do.

Compression is a first stop for me although you need to understand the compressor to make this work. Compressing the drums and the bass at the same time can work although i would tackle them individually. Compression a drum kit with a fast attack time can often mute the snap of the drums as the initial transients of the drum sounds can be lost. A slowish attack time therefore with a fast release time works for me. Compressing in real time with real time adjustments is the only way to do it. Guessing what it might sound like and then processing with preset values would be more a matter of luck than anything.

One thing that holds true through mixing drums and bass guitars is that they have to work together but rarely occupy different areas of the audio spectrum. Eq is an invaluable tool to make a drum and bass work together by allowing you to subtract certain frequencies and therefore bandwidths from one instrument that are occupied by the other. There is no hard and fast figures to offer you here other than to say that playing around with frequencies and tight bandwidths from 50hz to 800hz will get you started.

In other words, try subtracting 400hz from one instrument to allow the other instrument to breath at 400hz. All I am doing here is selling you an idea. Eq some areas of an instrument out to let the other breath and then compress them individually. If you get the chance to mix two drum kits together then go for it. Two snares often works for me and a second kick drum at the start of each bar for instance may get your riffs grooving a little more..

best of luck

Re: How do I make a kicking BASS/DRUM for my dance music songs.

I don't know if this would work but hear me out. Take the song into ACID and then you can layer on a different drum sample or whatever. Never tried it, but it just popped into my head.

: I use Yamaha DJX-I as a synth to make songs. The sequencer I use is "Yamaha XG works 3.0". I make the song there as MIDI, then I record it straight from the phone jack of DJX to the line in of the computer with a stereo cable. Everything sounds good, although because it goes from analog to digital the sound quality decreases a little bit. The thing is that I can never get the bass and the beat to KICK!!!. (I'm sure many of you know what I mean by kicking). The drum and bass sound weak, not pumping/stomping like typical dance tracks.

: I have good softwares: cool edit pro, soundforge 4.5, goldwave, audio quarts master.

: What should I do? I've tryed everything. Raising the volume which does not work because then the bass, or the beat sound distorted. Amplyfing it by boosting the bass in DB levels, and I can only do it so much, but still, the bass and beat do not sound like the ones from regular dance tracks.
: A friend told me to use dynamics, to compress it with soundforge. I tryed to do that, but I don't hear the difference. He said it is so post to make it louder and more kicking.
: Please, help me. I would apreciate it greatly.

: i know exactly what you mean,i'm having the same problem.my tracks sound home made, and no matter what i do it doesn't sound phatt!!
i've got some kick drum samples on a cd and none of them sound like a kick from a record.they must layer different kicks together, thats the only thing i can think of.
if you've got a synth you can take 2 basslines, layer them but put one -12 semitones down(this is an octave below the other one),this makes it sound thicker.

how to split full album mp3s easily can anybody eles help?

I am trying to split several full albums that I have downloaded so if yooou could point me in the right dirrection I would be very great full

Re: how to split full album mp3s easily can anybody eles help?

Audio editor, cut and paste individual tracks to another audio window and save by track name. There might be other ways of doing it but I suspect you will still have to do it by ear.

looking for particular mp3 player

I need an mp3 players that can do two very specific things...

I need to be able to make my own playlist AND it MUST have pitch or tempo control.

Does anyone have good recommendations?
Thanks
Boo

Re: looking for particular mp3 player

Search this site for a program called 'AutomixMP3'. BPM-Studio will too. Heck, search their other mp3 site at www.mp3machine.com for the word 'tempo' and you will get a list of likely suspects from that!

Converting SMPTE into number of bars

Does anyone know of a piece of software that converts
the time (SMPTE) into number of bars.

I'm using Premeire to put the visuals together but my audio software counts in bars , i need to sync audio/video but need to convert these values ....

Please help (Failing that is there a simple calculation
to do the above ?)

Re: Converting SMPTE into number of bars

What audio software? SMPTE is generally frames per second is it not?

A certain number of frames (depending on what side of the water you are from) per second. I thought most audio sequencers let you count in SMPTE as well as bars over tempo..

Rimmer

Re: Converting SMPTE into number of bars

I use reason2

As far as i know - Audio sequencers only count in bars

although i have found a calculator which does the conversion now !

New way to play MP3's

I just read about this new device that lets you play MP3's and WMA files on your Gameboy. I don't think its out yet but it seems pretty cool. The website for the info is www.songpro.com

free software with vst effects?

Hi,
I'm looking for some free software with which I can use VST effects. Does such a thing exist?

It's not important, what this piece of software does, I just want to try out VST effects, so I can test out how they sound. I don't have Cubase or any other program that works with VST.

Thanks,
Stefan

Re: free software with vst effects?

Buzz is free

www.buzzmachines.com i think

it's made by JJeskola and if you download the Polak VSTi Loader then you can use VST instruments etc...

Yes, Jeskola Buzz and Polac VST Adapter make buzz so so so good

Re: free software with vst effects?

On a mac, use xVST and rVST. On a PC, you can use AnalogBox. I can't remember if AnalogBox uses DirectX or VST plug-in modules, but it's free to download and try, like xVST and rVST. I'm sure that there are other PC programs better suited for VST though.

Wavs to Simsynth

Hello everyone!

I was just wondering if there's any way to convert
wave files (.wav) to Simsynth-format (.syn)? Or is
there some other way to import waves to Simsynth?

I know that I can export Simsynth-generated loops
to wave-format, but what about the other way around?

Thank you in advance for any responses!

Yours,
Jacob

Re: Wavs to Simsynth

I could be wrong, but I don't think that there is a way to do that yet.
I'm pretty sure that SimSynth generates WAVes with mathematical algorithms. I mean it's using applied calculus and algebra, I doubt that
there are any waveforms inside of the program. However, you could email
the programmer who made SimSynth. If anyone has such a converter, it's them.

That sure would be cool if there was such a program.

Re: Wavs to Simsynth

Thanks for the answer!

I suspected that there might not yet be any way to
import WAVes to SimSymth... But it was a good idea
to contact the programmers, so maybe I just ask them.

In the meantime (a follow-up question!), does anyone
know any other program that can be used to generate
those .SYN -files -- or is there a website or pay-cd
that has more .SYN-samples? I am using Fruity Loops
and SimSynth to make music, but I'm always in need
of more samples (especially for the SimSynth, which
is excellent piece of software). :)

Thanks again!

Yours,
Jacob.
