Can I move previously purchased music to my hard drive?

Yes, mechanically - CDex as Andy suggested will do the job handily.

http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Cdex/

However, depending upon which country you live in there are laws, which govern your archival activities.

The laws in the USA, say you are not allowed too make a backup of digital recordings, only audio recordings as i understand...

: I have windows ME and I am curious, can I take my existing musical cds and store them on my hard drive? Can I make playlists to listen to them on my speakers or a patch thru my stereo amplifier? Thanks John

Re: Recording to hard drive?

Get a copy of CDex. This will extract files from CD and store them on your HD. However, you may want to convert them to MP3, as WAV files take up a lot of space (650MB for a CD).

LP to CD

Quality of source, and soundcard input quality is a start

John,

You have a major project to accomplish. Andy gave you great guidance on the sound cards, now mechanically you will still need to experiment. It appears one sound card, works for me, the same sound card might not have the shielding your specific computer requires, to rip your LPs in the quality of playback you are trying to achieve.

Then the software to capture, the input, and edit the captured stream. Meaning will you take the time to rip each song/selection separately from each LP - or rip an entire side of the LP? Then use an editor separating each song and then clean each of your recordings one by one afterwards.

If you have not done this in the past, you might want to try inexpensive software to learn the procedure. Then step up to higher end software as you learn how to accomplish and adjust the mechanics.

My suggestion to start this project and make archival copies of your previously purchased music, LPs would be “LP recorder, and LP Ripper”, to accomplish your objectives.

Then converting the files from to MP3 file, or making archival copies from your CD try Cdex 1,40 it is free software.

Another good program to have is MP3Decode. It is a fast, high quality, and easy to use decoder to convert all those mp3 files you have collected to WAV? Allowing you to create the WAV files needed to for Audio CD Rs that play on a good number CD players. http://www.etalonsoft.com/mp3decode.html

When you have mastered the mechanics, let us know how your archival project is progressing

Re: LP to CD

A decent soundcard (SB Audigy, TB Santa Cruz/VL Sonic Fury) and the best possible turntable/preamp you can get. The better the quality of the source, the better the final quality will be. If the source is poor, then no amount of tweaking will make it sound as good as the original.

Andy

Re: LP to CD

May not be that simple.

My limited experience follows. Playback of the LP via the PC speakers - sounds great. Great bass, treble and presence.

Record on the PC and play back the .wav recording and sounds bad compared to the original LP in an A/B comparision - the digital version .wav version is noticeably inferior - dull in fact.

Can someone offer any suggestions?

I have tried to up the sample rate but cannot find how to do it though . . .

Music using webtv

I am using webtv (msntv?) and cannot download. Are there any online sites I can go to that I can listen to music.
I used to know of one but cannot find it again.
Email me back if anyone knows, thanks.

voice clarity

PLease i need info on this: on magix music maker i am having trouble making recorded vocals sound clear. if anyone knows the settings to make vocals clear please email me thanks

Re: voice clarity

It may be down to the quality of the microphone and the environment in which you're recording. A cheap microphone and a noisy room will play havoc with your recording (hence the reason why recording studios are soundproof and professional quality microphones cost hundreds).

samples (e.g. birds, hammer, rain falling etc.)

If anyone can tell me where I can find samples of sounds. Espacially I need sounds of birds, hammer striking a nail, aeroplane taking off, ship docking, train etc.

Re: samples (e.g. birds, hammer, rain falling etc.)

Check out one of our Guides for a start.

Re: samples (e.g. birds, hammer, rain falling etc.)

Also, do a search for samples and loops in Yahoo. They have a category just for this.

Album Image, Track Names

how can i burn cds so that windows media player can read the album image and track names?

Re: Album Image, Track Names

You need a CD burner that is CD Text compatible, and software that is capable of writing CD Text.

Andy

Re: Album Image, Track Names

i have all that...media player doesnt seem to read cd text

Re: Album Image, Track Names

No, there is no way to embedd the data into the track, as all recorded CDs have to conform to the Red Book standard, which means the track data must be written in the index.

From what I can gather, the Toshiba combo drives are CD-Text compatible, so unless the software isn't set up properly, I can't see an obvious cause.

Andy

Re: Album Image, Track Names

Does this happen with other CD players? (There are plenty of free ones around. Try another instead of WMP and see if it ignores track names). If so, it's likely that WMP is the problem.

Which software did you use to burn your CDs and what model CD-RW have you got?

Andy

Re: Album Image, Track Names

i've used over 20 different burner programs...my burner is the DVD/CD-RW that comes with the toshiba satellite notebooks...i cant remember the model
is there a way to imbed the id3 info into the audio track?

PARIS AND LINUX

Hello all... I wonder is there a way to work paris on linux platforms ?? and if yes can you guys direct me to it ?? or explain how ??
thank you very much

Anyone else have a FujiFilm 40i?

It is a combo digital camera and mp3 player... one that actually takes good pictures! Not like the Kodak mc3. Anyway, they included this really stupid copy protection which barely does more than renaming mp3 files to have an .svq extension. However I've tried naming them back and it doesn't work. The problem is that the "audio downloading program" requires you to use the USB cable! Despite my computer having a SmartMedia adaptor, it won't transfer this way. And now that I bought a new laptop, the USB drivers won't work under WinXP. Does anyone know of a way around this problem? Thanks!

- Adam

P.S. If you don't mind emailing me with an answer, please do...

burning cds

i don't know how!

Re: burning cds

You need the hardware; a CD Writer (recommend Hewlett Packard), and software: see here, and blank CD-Rs. Also, try www.cdrinfo.com for further information on this topic.

your site in the link of www.kotomusic.com

excuse me i am me again only for say this:
Dear Friend i am the real koto still alive !!!!!!! it would be beautiful to add your fantastic web site at www.kotomusic.com special links music
if you want .........send me your photo i put it too......
Anfrando Maiola.

ps my web site is in phase of construction ...
and I want to insert all the styles of music
among which the Radio tv dj and so on music !!!!

why

I WISH ALL THE BEST FOR ALL GUYS IN THIS FANTASTIC WEB SITE.
first of all ....thanks to all Friends / Fans that will participate in our adventure in the web site kotomusic.com ........ there will be many surprises. why I make you download free 'koto still alive '-- 'koto still alive tribal action' and ''Visitor still alive'' version ?

because the copies are finished and I 'm not able ,for now,to satisfy all the requests.
further i know that 'Koto is still alive' is not liked by all kotofans.... however you have to think that : a koto years 80s was not proper italo dance but it was perhaps already techno... and if i had had the opportunity to continue my music it would be year for year changed toward future musical horizons so that the fans of koto would also be evolved.

for me ''Koto is still alive ''is a fundamental point in the history of koto music and ''koto still alive'' for me is a symbol of liberty and justice that every artist should have .

perhaps one day you will understand me .......i hope.

your Friend Anfrando Maiola. NOT ONLY ARTIST BUT ONE OF YOU.

and now Enjoy with Kotomusic and worldwide Friends / Fans
