Re: Midi to CDA

Try MIDI2WAV Converter (its in the software section under Format Converters).

A CDA file does not contain any music - it is a shortcut used on CDs to indicate track position and so on (if you look at an audio CD using Windows Explorer, you'll see that the CDA files are all 1k in size, which is far too small to contain the music).

To burn the CD, you need to convert the files to WAV format, then use Nero or Easy CD Creator.

Echo problems with Sonar 2...Please help!

Heres the situation: I installed sonar and chose the proper midi in/out, and everything is playing and recording (I can hear what I am recording), the only problem is that my keyboard is on delay. It is playing the notes a full 2 seconds before the computer makes a sound. This also happens when I record. I tried turning the echo off under the options/project, but then I have no sound. I also tried turning off the local control setting on the keyboard, but that didn't change anything. There is nothing else in the help manual about this, and I was hoping someone here could help me. Thanks

Re: Echo problems with Sonar 2...Please help!

:disable input monitoring in the audio options section. had exactly the same problem myself!!!!

wav-files out of cda??

Please - can somebody tell me, how creating wav-files or similar files out of cda-files???

Re: wav-files out of cda??

At the risk of repeating myself, CDA files do NOT contain music - they are simply shortcuts which tell the CD player basic information about the track - start position, duration etc. Look at an audio CD using Windows Explorer and all you see is a list of CDA files, each 1k in size. Considering a CD can hold 650MB, that leaves a hell of a lot of space.

To extract the files off an audio CD, all you need is a ripper - CDex (available free from www.cdex.n3.net) will do the job.

Download Manager

A friend, who's new to the scene, has just signed up with EMusic. To download full albums from the site, EMusic suggest Zinf, which automatically downloads all the tracks in parallel, usually three or four at a time. However, Zinf doesn't appear to like WindowsXP, the download manager refusing to work. JRiver's Media Jukebox has a download manager that works, but does anyone know of any other progs that do this?

shareware

Hi, I am a KJ in Las Vegas NV and I would like to know what is the best way to record CD+G songs to my hardrive. I have about 10,000 songs.
(1)Do I have to record them all in real-time?
(2)How many songs can I get on a 60 GB drive?
(3)Does it work well with external hardrives?
(4) How do I organize the files to coinside with my songbook, so I can bring up a requested song in a short period of time?
Thank you for your time

QS8 question....MIDI and audio sequenced together

I am in the steep part of the learning curve...yikes...hope it gets better.

Cubase VST/5.1 with an Alesis QS8. Sound card is the Audiophile 2496 on XP.

Hope one or more of you might recognize this problem...

When monitoring a bunch of tracks I've layed down, some audio and some midi, I want to record more audio tracks from my QS without the MIDI playback being recorded in that track.

My QS is obviously being used to recreate the MIDI sounds I want...and at the same time generate another audio signal for an audio track. I have tried various monitoring and signal send choices and scoured the manuals for 3 or 4 hours trying to isolate this. Might be in vain.

Hope this rings a bell. Has to be a common stumbling block.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Thinking "out loud" about it.

I am not entirely sure about this one, but it reminds me of times when i needed to be simultaneously utilizing multiple MIDI channels of my controller synth.

If I am not mistaken, you were using your computer as the master MIDI clocking source.

It seems like part of the issue is a MIDI channel one, and the other part of the issue is an audio output routing issue. Let's call your human-generated MIDI performance material "XX", even though we are really interested in your overdubbed AUDIO performance material.

Your QS8 needs to be configured in it's menus to send it's live overdub MIDI on channel "XX" to your computer. That is, if you end up wanting a MIDI recording of your overdub. Even if you DONT want a MIDI overdub, you kinda need to think this way to differentiate the signals, since the computer can't without your guidance.

However, you stated that you are more interested in recording the audio tracks as overdubs at the moment. Therefore, the computer need only provide a synchronized audio recording input while playing back it's prerecorded material and transmitting its prerecorded MIDI material. Let's call that copmuter-generated MIDI signal "YY".
At the same time, the QS8 needs to be set up to receive on channel "YY" your midiPlayback material.

The computer needs to be able to match this split personality as well. Hence, the computer needs to transmit your playback material on channel "YY", (to the QS8) and exclusively receive your MIDI overdub performance on channel "XX". Almost, that is.

Since you say you don't actually need to record any MIDI, just audio, the computer actually has less work to do compared to the QS8. The computer merely needs to be set up to receive AUDIO on whatever AUDIO input channel you select. This is hopefully not much of an issue if your audio multitrack is flexible and logical.

The trickier aspects lay in the capabilities of the QS8.

The QS8 needs to be able to specify different audio outputs for each MIDI channel at hand. That is, Mr. QS8 needs to send XX MIDI-controlled AUDIO out one audio output, while sending YY MIDI-controlled AUDIO out another audio output. Big keyboards can usually do this, but you have to select the routing. I am not entirely familiar with the QS synths, but I recall that they have ADAT outputs, which implies 8 separated audio output channels (at least in digital audio form).

As you can see, this is getting a bit vaigue, but as long as you identify the types of various data streams, it's not so terrible.

There's only so much I can do from here, though...
I am not aware of other details of your setup, such as the internal ADAT signal routing of your QS8, and whether or not the Audiophile accepts ADAT signals. Similarly, if your DirectSound or DirectX setup isn't yet set for Full-duplex operation, there will be an impasse. I am going to do some more thinking about this.

Very good thoughts

M.I.T,

Great pondering on my situation. Soon I will think this way fluently...without the "translation" steps I go through now. I am still working on understanding signal routing clearly. I can taste it but I am not yet comfortable with it.

My QS does have an ADAT out and my soundcard had the S/PDIF in and outs...so there might be a way to hook that route up.

The QS8 MIDI assignments (I admit to being about a 5 out of 10 on education here) have options that may include a split as you suggest. I will have to dig deeper in the manual for that one.

Thanks for offering advice. This is the TIP..of the 'berg...as they say. I am leaning in for another 8 hours with the books open at my PC.

Regards,

Mark

Re: ARTISTS WANTED

"We charge this small per song fee submission to discourage artist from sending every song they have."

(LOL - what kind of justification do you call that ?)

"We only want your best one to three songs. This small fee also reduces the amount of demo tapes we receive and seems to inprove the quality of demo tapes submitted drastically. This allows us to focus and help those artist who are serious about a career in the music industry."

You are very welcome to correct me if I am wrong but....

1> Charging a fee for demo submission seems like nothing more than a convenient way of making money from aspiring artists.
I seriously doubt that charging a fee would have any impact on the quality of submissions.

2> You have provided a postal address for your submissions but seem to have "Forgotten" to mention what Record company / Label you claim to represent !
(Which does nothing but re-confirm my first point)

So in otherwords, what benefit does an artist get from
submitting to you other than lining Your Pocket ?

Correct me if I'm wrong !

There is no simple way to take someone through the workings of Logic on a forum. It all trial and error in one hand and a manual in the other. Best of luck.

Music

Does anybody know how to put music from your hardrive to a website. does anyone know the code for it. thanks

P is for Protocol

OK, i'm gonnna try to answer this as best i can.

<A HREF="ftp://server.website.com/directory/subdirectory/mysong.mp3">This is an example of the the kind of link for downloading files. Copy this link to the clipboard and paste it into a text file to read it.</A>

HTML download links start with "<A HREF=" followed by a quotation mark, the full link address, quotation mark, ">", The clickable hypertext, and "</A>".

Full link addresses start with "http://", "https://", "ftp://", "nntp://", and "mailto:". HTTPS is for a secure connection such as on eBay. FTP is for file transfer, and MAILTO is for an email address. NNTP is for news (USENET) groups. There are other protocols, but they are proprietary and/or much less common.

If you want to provide a file for download, then you must have a way of sending the file to the website server. This is usually done by using FTP, although small files could possibly be mailed as attachments to the webmaster with a request note. Files should always be uploaded in BINARY or RAW MODE. This means that the file will not be converted in any way. But first, before you do that, you must compress the file into a standard format. Mac files are typically compressed as .SIT files. PC files are typically compressed as .ZIP files. Filenames should be abbreviated and not contain any spaces or unusual typecharacters.

If you must distribute Mac files to PC users, then
first BinHex convert the files to .SIT, then to .HQX, and then .ZIP. If you have Alladin or StuffIt, then you can do this in fewer steps. In DropStuff, for example, you can automatically convert/compress files into the .SIT.HQX format--ready for internet uploads and downloads. Be aware that the .HQX conversion makes file sizes bigger but is a necessary step in encasing them in a "travel bag" format. This isn't a problem, since the compression stage reduces the file size. If you must email the file(s), compression is absolutely necessary, since some email services won't allow files larger than 3MB to be served.

Assuming that you have an account on your website and you have uploaded your files to the server, you must now do the following steps:

1) grant the rest of the world READ access to your files,
2) grant the rest of the world READ and EXECUTE access to the directory/folder which contains your public files.

This is often called publishing or publicizing your files. It's also called setting the permissions, or granting permissions.

After that, you should verify that address and embed it in your webpage for people to access. If you use an FTP link, be sure your server can deal with ANONYMOUS or GUEST FTP requests. If you use any other kind of link, be sure that your server can deal with HTTP requests. HTTPS is a bit more involved, so if you want to use that, you'd better buddy up with the webmaster and tech support of the server site.

This sounds complex, but really it's not so complex.
In the old days, to upload a file to a site one would use the FTP command "PUT". Downloading involved the "GET" command. It's really almost the same today, but with pictures and icons (GUI) instead of text commands.

Well, good luck.

p.s. = On the MacOS freeware Fetch often comes with your operating system. It is an advanced and easy to use FTP program. You can use it for uploads, downloads, and even sending more complex FTP commands such as setting permissions. Furthermore, on the Mac, File Sharing can be adapted to use PPP (internet style connections) so that you can serve files directly off of your Mac. On the PC, there are complete file sharing and networking packages on your Windows installation CD. If you must, you can even run DOS programs for this if you can find some online. You can access these from the ADD/REMOVE HARDWARE/SOFTWARE control panel. Be warned that serving files from your home computer is totally insecure and will set you up to be hacked by outside influences. On a UNIX system, there are so many ways to upload and download files, it's ridiculous to even mention it. The internet is built from UNIX (or LINUX) computer servers.

P is for Protocol Correction: Mind your P's and Q's.

There was an HTML error in my first message, so to read about the link structure, read the text in the COMMENTS field of the POST A FOLLOWUP section. You will notice some details were left out, because I don't yet know how to quote HTML without triggering it.

I wonder if this would work:

<<A HREF="ftp://server.website.com/directory/subdirectory/myfreeware.hqx.zip">>Click here to download<</A>>

PTHUNK.DLL

Does anyone know where I can find this file?
