If you still have the original installation disks then
you will have all the files you need. If you don't then
you will need to get a program - try looking in the
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/NOTATION/">Notation</a> area on this site.

a tool for voice recordings?

hello. i've created me some backround music but now i need a tool with which i can add my voice to wav or mp3 files. if you've got such a tool please send it to me per e-mail. thanks.

Re: a tool for voice recordings?

The tool is called a microphone and I doubt anyone is going to send you one.. Nice try though.. :/

Why do you want to add your voice to a wave or Mp3? don't you want to mix it with the background music?

This is too much guess work for anyone..

The case of the missing 'S'

Trust me, it's not so great over here. This country is run by villans and fools in a system designed for corporations, conformity, and consumers.

I think I'd much rather live in a place like Denmark.
And I'm not just saying that because I like Legos.

Re: The case of the missing 'S'

Try Canada (not the French-speaking bits) or New Zealand (if you don't mind the sheep).

Re: The case of the missing 'S'

England has almost exactly the same attributes as you described for the US but is more expensive and wetter... ;/

Denmark sounds nice but I do prefer to live in English speaking countries. Australia sounds nice...

S is for Singapore

Y'know... Australia doesn't sound half bad! I like how they turn up their noses at American genetically-transmogrified food imports. By the way, Collin Powell looks like Lister without dreadlocks.

midi

could someone tell me what a midi controller is and how many inputs on my computer will i need i have a keyboard connected but also want a mixing desk and midi controllers i use fruityloops and reason thanx!

Re: midi

A midi controller can be anything from a dedicated midi controller (with knobs on..) to a midi keyboard. You could plug a midi keyboard controller into your computer (not all midi controllers make sounds of their own. Traditionally most if not all of them did.

If you have a mixing desk, you could plug the main outs to a computers audio/sound card and then anything you plug into that could be mixed to the two tracks. How many inputs you will need at a time is something you will have to work on yourself.

Game Copy

I got Desperados pc game and would like to make a backup, but keep on asking for original disk after the copy process.

Can you tell me how to do it ?

General Midi

I just got a new ctk-573 general midi compatible keyboard, and I thought with gm I could get lots more sounds off my computer (cakewalk pro audio 9) but I guess I don't know enough about general midi, how can
I get more sounds like drumsets and pads and stuff? thanx

Re: General Midi

With respect, you sound confused.

GM stands for General Midi and is a standard started by Roland (I am pretty sure). It doesn't give more sounds at all. It's more a facility so that a GM midi file can tell a GM module what sounds (patches) to use for specific instruments. GM was the first real standard.

I suspect you might be able to find a patch list for use with Cakewalk so you could change the sounds in the Casio from Cakewalk itself. Cakewalk wont make a sound unless you have it controlling any internal soundcard you might have. I suspect the Casio would sound better.

I generally don't mess with patch changes and such like when recording as I have found them unnecessarily time consuming for my level of use. Each to their own...

If you want a sound, find it on the Casio and use it. Record your part via midi and plug the audio output from the Casio into Cakewalk and record that too. This way you can change the sound on the Casio and use it for the next part without having to strain the machine by expecting it to play the whole tune at the same time. I doubt 24 notes of polyphony will go far when you break out the strings and brass. If you eventually don't like the first sound as the composition progresses, you can find a new sounds, unmute that tracks midi track and record in a new sounds over the old track. Get it?

Drum sounds using MIDI

I am using MUSICTIME DELUXE Ver 3.5 and a Yamaha PSR-280 ketboard. When I play back with MIDI using the
Drum Kit list from the PSR manual, the drum sounds are
very poor quality, both on the computer speakers and the keyboard speakers. Sounds from the keyboard, when
played on the keyboard keys are great! I did customize
the Device Menu in MUSICTIME by adding a new device to
the 'Choose Instrument' dialog and added 'DRUMS' #119.
Anyone else had this problem? How to fix? Thanks, Louis

Re: Drum sounds using MIDI

remember midi signal represents data info not sound. so the sound you hear from your computer speakers is probablly generated from your computer soundcards midi set (check the midi out settings of musictime). You can get a new card with a better midi soundset on board or install a software midi soundset like Yamaha SYXG 50. You will experience a latency delay with a software soundset tho so maybe a new card is the way to go.

dan

Re: Drum sounds using MIDI

Thank you, Dan. I understand that the MIDI sends
commands and not sounds. Therein lies my problem.
MIDI commands from the computer to the keyboard give
the same response from the keyboard. The sounds on the keyboard from a MIDI command do not sound like the
sounds generated by pressing a key on the keyboard.
They should, shouldn't they? Thanks, Louis.

How do I Recover a Lost Midi File

Recently while working on a significant midi file using Midisoft Studio I attempted to save my work. The computer responded with: "Your disc drive is full, can not save" -- this of course was not the case. I backed out of the system, the reentered to recover my work. When I tried to reopen the file, it came up empty. Not only had my previous attempt to save the file failed, but it had also made the original file inaccessible.

My computer indicates that it still has a 28kB file were the "offending file" used to be, but the Midi program won't read it.

How do I go about recovering the file?

Re: How do I Recover a Lost Midi File

This looks like a job for Norton's Utilities which you
will find at <a href="http://www.symantec.com/nu/nu_9x/features.html" target="blank">http://www.symantec.com/nu/nu_9x/features.html</a>.

No guarantees on getting back this particular file
though...

Jason.

Where's the Doctor when you need him ?

It is possible to recover more aspects of a heavily corrupted file... however, this can take lots of hard research and attention to detail.

Given a file that resists all other attempts (such as Norton Utilities/Disk First Aid/Ect), if it's still on your hard drive then maybe there is more you can do. Audio files are a bit easier to recover, but MIDI files aren't so easy. What it all comes down to, is editing the file in a HEX editor. A Hex editor is an editing program that can open any and all kinds of files. WinHex is for the PC, and HexEdit or Snoop is for the Mac. ResEdit is a partial Hex editor, and Disk Editor is a total Hex editor. Others exist of course.

Well, you're on your own with a Hex editor. All it allows you to do is open up the file and read it. That may not seem like much, but you'd be surprised at what you can find inside of programs and files. Just be warned... hex editing can seriously damage files if you save any changes. It's a bit like open-heart surgery.

So, let's say you open up your BAD MIDI file. If you're lucky, you might see something in plain English (ASCII). Otherwise, you may have to study how to READ HEXIDECIMAL, and MIDI HEXIDECIMAL, in particular. There are resources online which can describe these things as well as the MIDI standard file format.

Unless you are studying computer science, these are going to be boring and unrewarding courses of action.

Nevertheless, I find it useful to at least try something futile like this every so often, just to see what I can learn. You might feel the same way.

All I can say is this: If you want to make music, make music. If you want to become a data expert, then start in with the Hex editor and your online research on MIDI file formats, Hexidecimal, and other technobabble.

Sure enough, it's easier just to start a new MIDI song up. You'd be surprised at how good you can be at recreating a song when all other options are burnt out.

Remember, if you created it, it came from you. You ARE the creator; you CAN create again. Do not be discouraged by mere repetition.

Re: burning audio tapes onto CD's

Plug tape machines audio outputs into Sound/Audio cards audio inputs (you might need an RCA to Minijack Stereo lead. Check music shops and Radioshack style shops for the lead). Download yourself some audio recording software from this site. Learn the software (get something simple), press record and play the cassette. You should now have a file which is either a Wave file or an Aiff file depending on your computer platform.

Any burning software worth it's salt will burn an audio CD from the above file..

MP3 playback on home stereo not good enough!

Hello,

I've converted all my CDs into MP3s most at 256kbps. I use Windows Media player for playback and Music Match for line -in recording for my LPs. I purchased an Edirol UA-1A DAC to playback from and record to my laptop. My problem is that even with the high encode rate (256) when I playback through the UA-1A to the Aux input on my home stereo reciever it is definately NOT CD quality. Has any one had this problem and what do I need to do to achieve the quality sound I'm looking for?

Thanks for your time

Re: MP3 playback on home stereo not good enough!

I can't tell the difference between 192 and 256. I have tried.

I can tell the difference between an MP3 and and MP4 though. Mp3 is much more lossy at 128kbps and is larger in file size. Get into MPEG4 AAC audio. It's definately better sounding and smaller in size.

Re: MP3 playback on home stereo not good enough!

Window's Media player has a terrible MP3 converter. Use WinAmp. It's free and much better.
If you want your LP's to sound like CD's cool edit has good noise reduction.

Also make sure that your turntable is of good quality. If the source is poor, then no amount of electronics is going to put it back - GIGO!!!

music for footbag/hackysack video

G'day
I'm in the midst of producing a video called Footbag Assassin,it's a tutorial, and we need some high energy, thrash, punk, surf music to use in the background.
We can't offer any money, but we can offer exposure and credits.
Also the possiblity of a short segment on Pepsi Chilli Factor(extreme sports TV program)
This video will be sold to many stores throughout Australia and eventually the rest of the world.
Could be excellent exposure for talented musicians.

Cheers.

Curious... tell me more

What is the time frame for this consultance ? What's your deadline, that is ? What is the primary objective ? Nevertheless, it sounds like a lot of fun to me; a good series of challenges. I am a trained and experienced sound engineer, but my ego is a lot more tame and in check in person than online. You definately have my attention.

Re: more info

The tijmeframe is both long terma dn short. I have immediate needs of setup/evaluation and training and long term goals for live recording/mastering etc. The primary objective short term is to utilize my mixing consoles more effectively and produce higher quality sound output. Can you contact me directly at markruttle@hotmail.com with more info about your experience? Thanks

Re: more info

I will send you an email. Thanks for your patience.
